Re: Shady Rest has walls...

Neil,
The waste water (gray & sewer) exits the house by gravity through another pipe (4" or 6" ???) that passes through the footer and then on into the septic system. The black pipes shown in my last picture are the gray water drains leading to the main drain.
Yes, basement footers are normally below the frost line. At our exposed walkout side of the basement, the footers are not below the frost line & therefore are poured over 2' thick (depth) & have a foam insulatng material on the outside to help keep the frost line away from the basement floor.
All the utilities are also located in the basement.

Cool

I am learning al the time. Involved in buildings all my (working) life but never involved with domestic basements.

Any Aussie questions you have??

(No the water doesn't go down the plughole the other way /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif)

Cheers

Re: Shady Rest has walls...

Inspector,
Come on by. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I was by your area over Easter on our way to & from Middletown. I took I-270 down around to I-71 South...
I don't know that I need an independent electrical inspection, but would welcome your opinion & advise. I may really need it if I end up running the electric to the barn myself./w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif

Re: Shady Rest has walls...

I'm not expert & may have mis-stated a thing or two since I only know what I've half-learned preparing for our building project. I learn more every time that I go out to the construction sight.
We spent 3 years planning for this house and have worked to keep the cost in line.
The plughole direction was the important query /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
I have one question... Do Kangaroos really box? /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Re: Shady Rest has walls...

Our cyclones (I think they are the same as your hurricanes, not tornadoes) go anti-clockwise. I think yours go clockwise. There is some science in that one, but not in the plughole one !!

Well Kangaroos do box actually, and there is a big market in roo skin boxing gloves /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Gee that was almost 20 years ago since our "Boxing Kangaroo" whooped your US butt in the American's Cup.

What a fine day that was for us Aussies. I can still remember sitting up in the early morning for that race.

Well the designer has since died and the financier sent to Jail, but apart from that...............

Cheers

Yup, that sounds like the American's cup./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I had also seen that race. I think I am one of the few in the US that watch the races.

Re: Shady Rest has walls...

Shade,
If you went South on I-71 from 270, you were within 2 miles of my house /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

That makes two of us Paul. Between all the sailing and bicycling coverage on TV in the US, it's amazing I get any tractor time at all /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: Shady Rest has walls...

Shade,

Oh that pic brings back memories from two years ago.

Don't want to stick my nose in but this may be your last chance...if you want radiant heat in the basement floor or maybe might want it later...you can install the flexible tubing yourself in the floor for only a few hundred. We did this and are glad we did. After the house was "done" we ended up adding the boiler within just a few months and what a difference it makes in the basement. Its hard to describe.

Shady Rest going up...

DVerbarg,
At this point, I just could not justify another heat system in addtion to propane forced air & wood burner. Maybe I'm wrong, but... see picture...

Re: Shady Rest has walls...

Here's a pic of 3 2nd floor walls being complete. This is from 2 days ago. Today, the actual roof sheathing is complete /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif. I will post a pic tomorrow evening... Things have rolled along this week. I am trying to get the front acre or two ready to seed...

Re: Shady Rest has walls...

Wow, coming along very nicely Shade. I take it that's a porch on the front?

Our second floor walls should be all done now, though I didn't get by there last night to see. Been kind of chaotic for us as we put our current house on the market Tuesday. Will have had six showings by noon today and have already turned down one offer. Good to know we're getting traffic anyway. I'll get some fresh pictures out there tonight.

At the rate you're progressing, you should be in long before us /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: Shady Rest going up...

Your probably better off not adding more. We kept adding more and ran about 30% over budget /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif!

Pics look great! Must be pretty excited. Or are you too tired? Personally love this part of the contruction phase, watching everything take shape and form.

Keep posting the pics.

Re: Shady Rest has walls...

RobS,
That is a 34'X8' porch on the front (begging for a 6' swing)... The 2nd floor is pretty dramatic. I also have been trying to get our current house ready for market. I haven't been on it like I should. I keep saying that the tractor work at the new house MUST be done... but I think that I'm avoiding the non-tractor work at the old house /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif. What's that word...?...DISCIPLINE /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif
Here's the latest pic from today. The roof sheeting is done. Things still are going well (knock on wood). I spent this evening grading the front acre & 1/2 with the boxblade & drag. Tomorrow I will pick up a lot of straw & rake to prepare for seeding if weather permits.
My sister found me here... oh no! /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif

Re: Shady Rest has walls...

Looks fantastic! You're gonna love the porch! Our current house has a five foot deep porch (with four foot swing) and the new one will have a deeper one yet. It's one of our favorite "rooms" in the house.

I'm very envious that you're getting all this work done with so little tear up to your "yard". I've got a lot of grading time ahead of me, which is OK from a tractor time standpoint, but not so much from an overall time view. Things will be less hectic when we sell this house.

I know exactly what you mean about prioritization on the current house projects. It's doubly hard when you know those efforts are going to some future owner. We buckled down a couple of weekends ago and got a lot of stuff done. The worst part now is trying to keep it clean for the showings /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

I saw that your sister found you. Hope none of mine find me, they might wonder what I'm not getting done that I should be /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
