Shaft Conversion for PTO Generator

You will need to get a frequency meter to get it to the right RPM. Here is a cheap frequency meter.

get a step up gearbox like many pto gensets use..

with only 150$ in it.. consider that a deal on the head only and get rid of the rub goldberg pulley deathtrap..

This is what the calculator says you have now:

To get 3600 RPM on the 2.5 pulley with a 540 PTO, you need a large diameter of 16.6...

I would prefer a gearbox instead.

The pulleys measure as follows:

Large = 7" (roughly 175mm)
Small = 2.5" (roughly 60mm)

That's the issue right? If the PTO generator calls for 3600rpm's and the tractor is a rear 540, I need a larger ratio between the two pulleys. It seems to make sense why the volts are only reading 100 or so.

Any brilliant ideas? Like, sell it and buy a different one? I only have $150 into it and it's a Winco. Old but apparently working.

Thanks for all the quick responses

Theres your problem alright. No single stage upgearing of ~ 7:1 is even possible with a 7" major pulley using a V belt. Even if possible it would slip bigtime. You could do it with a small HTD gearbelt and appropriate pulleys. That would be the cleanest mod to the existing setup - not cheap in proportion to your orig cost. You could buy a stepup gearbox for it - even more not cheap.

This has been a major education session. And I appreciate it.

Just did a bunch of reading on stepup gearboxes. Didn't know what one was until a few hours ago.

I'll be bouncing all this off a friend tomorrow, who knows his stuff. I'll likely pick up a different PTO generator, one that is setup for 540

Thanks again for all the quick help

If you sell it, tell the buyer that as it is, it needs about 1285 RPM input to turn 3600 RPM.

as cheap as that job was ( 150? ).. the addition of a few hundred dollar step up gear box would yeild a working pto gen still int he 'very cheap' range..
