But if you take a Cub Cadet 2500 or 3000 series, or a JD X700 and look at their shaft drive systems, they are very much the same design as used on their counterpart tractors of the past. It is a desireable feature, which is why these machines cost more today the same as they did in the past.

Pretty much sums it up completely - thanks

I'm gonna mention the Ingersoll 3000 and 4000 series tractors just because no one else did. True hydraulic drive and built like the old days:
Ingersoll Equipment Company - Winneconne, WI They are now back in production in Maine.

I'm looking for one of these but haven't seen any advertised anywhere yet.

To reiterate what neverenough said, Deere's http://www.machinefinder.com/ site is pretty amazing. Register, set your search parameters (what model/models you're looking for) and the results come up, starting with closest to you and working out. These machines are usually trade ins that have been gone over by Deere trained mechanics. You're likely to pay more to a dealer than if you find one for sale by owner, but you also have someone to go back to if there's something wrong.

There are always at least a couple 455's on eBay. That's where I got mine. Just plan on picking it up, rather than shipping, and don't pay for it until you inspect. I hear about eBay scams all the time, but -- knock on wood -- I have had great luck with purchases and sales on eBay for about 8 years.

I'll second that V-TwinMeister.

Indeed, not-so-surprising words of common sense and wisdom from Fordlords.

HOW SOME EVER...

PLEASE do not engage in a "belts versus shaft" debate here, that's NOT AT ALL what this thread is about folks. This thread is for/by people who prefer SHAFT-DRIVEN tractors and want to know what's out there, just like I now do. If you'd like to start another conversation on the merits of S versus B by all means, this could be interesting, but not here!

Thanks.

Thanks Joe, and it's really good to hear that Ingersoll is still/back in business. My former neighbor used to mow his field at pretty high ground speed with one of those (not sure of model) and all you could here from that thing was the deck. It never bogged down and the whole machine was built like a tank!

Not sure what that is, but I am sure it is not an Ingersoll. Looks interesting!

You forgot the Kubota G2160 diesel and the G2460 gas garden tractors.
The diesel sells new for around $7200-not sure on the gas model.
