About the pickup truck discussion:
One of the guys in the building where I worked drove 1 hour to work each way each day. He decided he needed a new vehicle and bought an F350 dually with all the bells and whistles. ??? He was a computer engineer so he didn't need it for work, so I asked him what he hauled with it. "Nothing" Well, why'd you buy such a big truck just for commuting? "Because I can".
So, It's not something I'd do, but it pointed out to me that each of us have different desires and priorities and it doesn't make it right or wrong. If someone can afford it they can do what they want.
That's funny, I've seen the same. I work my 1/2 ton too hard. Often on the bump stops. I just bought some air bags.

Computer nerd at word driving a brand new 1 ton single wheel duramax.

Seems like we should swap trucks. Mine was paid for since day 1. I dont know his situation, but oh my, I wouldn't make payments on that thing. Dang sure couldn't buy it outright.

A passenger in the back of a P/U on a freeway would definitely warrant a traffic stop.

How about if you attached an approved seat belt to the cargo tie down rings? and a cushion to sit on.

Naturally use approved belts and hardware, also rear facing should be no problem as many large SUV's are in that rear facing configuration.
Would be an interesting scenario to debate in court.

General aviation aircraft have seat belts attached to the seats which in turn are attached to the seat tracks.
Now there exist special clamps to attach cargo to those tracks so I simply attached (approved belts) to the cargo clamps and had passengers sit on cushions that in turn served as mattresses for the client's frying camper.

In the aircraft scenario I had that modification inspected and approved by Transport Canada.
(LOL, I loved oddball mods like that)

I would not want to turn too sharp. Not a lot of clearance. I do have 2 drawbars with a bolt between them. It works well to push something not running into the garage with my tractor. Just pick the front wheels up and it follows the broken one like a trailer.

Saw this guy on my way to work this morning.
No tie downs of any kind, just kind of balanced on the toolbox.
It rocked when he came to a stop.
Probably a foot of clearance to the vehicle. Hope he wasn't planning on turning too sharp.
And those wheels, ugh.
