I have several friends now living permanently abroad with no plans to come back.

One was here recently to settle the affairs of his deceased mom and told me he has no reason to return now.

I should get him to send me pictures of how motorcycles are used to haul all manor of goods where he is… all I can say is those bikes must have incredible tires!

Why would something like a moving company need to be licensed? The truck accident notwithstanding - dumb drivers do dump things all the time - nothing about the service of moving stuff should require special government oversight.

I am retired in Portugal, resident, on my way to citizenship.
My co-worker EE retired up here and moved to Portugal last year. He is near the coast. Strange story, he is an MG car nut. His car came from the UK. spent a few decades here, now it was shipped over there. :D

I don't know what sort of regulation/licensing there is there for movers, but in general:

I suspect the drive to license this that and the other has to do with the complete lack of any sort of effective "market forces" in self-regulating bad behavior. An operator in a small area has a much stronger need to manage their reputation, but in a large population area, or a big country, there's not enough corrective action taken by potential customers and a shady operator can still find business despite screwing half the people. Thus, regulation. Without it, little people get screwed; with it, everyone pays slightly higher prices to offset the costs of following the regulations.

There's a problem with shady movers who vanish with a family's entire household.

And I've read of major companies putting additional ballast, a smaller container, on the scale when they weigh your container.

My own experience was a tenant in my duplex who always tried to pay his rent with stereo gear etc he stole at the moving company where he was a laborer, responsible for packing people's stuff. He said 'everybody in the industry steals'. I don't know if that's true but it certainly applied to him, he wasn't modest about it. (No I never accepted anything!) Evicted them after a few months - both working but they couldn't make the rent.

And that's aside from the practice in many trades to use government licensing to restrict competition.

Found this on a trucking page, with the text: "For those who insist that cabovers have small cabs:"

A bit of a stretch, but snapped this on my way to work today. Technically not hauling anything, but prepared to.

Who puts roof racks on a quarter million dollar Lamborghini?

We only have a few salt-slushy days a year here but I often see a new and perfect looking Corvette, or higher, driving in that soup. I do not understand that.
