I'm surprised the trucking company doesn't use special GPS devices that take truck height and weight into account. Driver was inattentive for sure and undoubtedly on an unfamiliar route so the company should have anticipated this type of problem with a big truck. Driver was not the only idiot.

I'm an Owner/Operator and I have a Garmin DESL GPS in my rig. They are often WRONG. Given that this road is probably a secondary "back street," my GPS probably wouldn't have "Truck information for this road." Basically, if it's not a truck route, the GPS won't have weight, width or height restriction data for it.

GPS is just a tool. Nothing takes the place of an experienced, competent driver that can actually read signs and follow directions.

Understood. But that just makes even more clear that the company and dispatcher who sent this ill educated rookie driver out on the run is as much to blame.

I don't think the dispatcher sent her there. One of those linked articles said she missed a turn then didn't know how to back up so she went where she had gone before in her own car.

Also the article said she was going to Walmart. My relatives who drive say Walmart has strict scheduling, show up late and they don't want your load. So she was probably panicing.

That spooked inexperienced driver pushing 35 tons down that little back street at 30 mph was the perfect recipe for disaster. Good thing nobody got hurt.

And I read she was carrying a load of bottled water. One more reason that buying bottled water is stupid. Our bottled water fetish has cost us (with the help of moron driver) a historic bridge that will cost a million or two to replace. Just drink beer.

Lol... Cause it would have looked so much better with a beer truck crammed into that poor old bridge. *grin* I'll drink to that! Cheers!

If they hire morons to drive, that is all the more reason to invest in electronics to avoid such incidents. A GPS based alarm could prevent even most imbeciles from such a mistake. Trucking company still partly responsible for allowing driver who doesn't know how much truck weighs to drive for them.

It's always tempting to look to a technical solution to solve a human problem but in this case the driver would probably have turned it off anyway.

No substitute for human beings who are alert, trained and responsive to the situation and also competent.

I agree however there is a responsibility for the company to insure that the individual drivers it puts on the road are ready for the job. This chick obviously wasn't. She may be stupid and could never do the job but given what we know about her recent CDL and background (Amish) it seems clear she was a rookie. A company needs to take that into account when dispatching. Maybe the company did and she managed to screw it up anyways but I have my doubts. Not knowing that your truck weighs more than 6 tons is prima facie evidence that neither the CDL school nor the company did due diligence in preparing the driver.

We may never know the whole story. The lawsuit will be settled confidentially.
