It's actually a miracle that more people aren't killed by loose wheels on the road.

I stopped to check with a driver of a Taurus, on the line road just north of me about 2 months back. The front wheel was nowhere to be seen - studs had sheared off. It was his buddy's car, turns out they'd already had it back (!!!) to the shop that did the recent brake work, as the other front wheel had sheared off it's studs the week before !

The shop acted like it was the fault of the owner of the car....

It's not hard to argue that a 500# airgun in the wrong hands is more dangerous than a 22 rifle....

I retorque the trailer wheels every time before I use them, you are supposed to check them periodically.

Hind sight is always 20-20. Accidents do happen. Even freak ones.

About 40 years ago I was in the parking lot of a soon to open shopping mall in rural New England. The Interstate ran close by and in a millisecond we had a large truck (F500 ? size) tire with wheel come bouncing by at a fast and out of control clip. A week later and it would have inflicted some serious damage. It happened so fast we had to think about what happened.

We figure it was in the back of a pickup or trailer that hit a bump and fate took it downhill and onto the pavement. I don't think the owner ever knew what happened but maybe figured someone stole it the night before. This was in the middle of nowhere with really not much to hit. That incident influenced me ever since and I make extra sure what's in my truck or trailer stays there.

25 years ago I was working for a seed farmer here in Blountstown. He also owned a few dump trucks he hauled sand from his bother's sand pit with. The sand would get in everything and wear it out. Part of my job was greasing the trucks every week. We noticed one of the trucks had a heavy rubber strap holding the tie rod together. The driver was a girl I had gone to school with, and concerned for her safety, we told her about it. The owner got mad at us for letting her know. Well a few weeks after that the wheel came off at a red light in Tallahassee and totaled a small car. No one was hurt, but if it had happened at 70 mph there is no telling what it could have done.

In 1993 I was making the drive up from Biloxi, MS to home (Bradford, TN) and along I-55 between Jackson, MS and Memphis, in a nasty rain, all of a sudden I see a very large wheel and tire coming across the median right at me. I slammed the accelerator to the floor. Luckily it had been raining so hard for so long there was standing water at a low point in the median and when it hit the water it changed the direction ever so slightly. Between the slight acceleration and the slight change in direction the wheel and tire went behind me. That day other drivers were being careful and keeping big distances between vehicles and no one got hit. The pucker factor definitely went up there for a few seconds.

bet that mower rear end is hating life!

Especially since those MTD rear ends are filled with bentonite grease, not even 80w90 gear oil.. They grenade on their own from normal usage due to heat build up. I cant imagine towing one.
