Here’s one of the best I’ve seen. These idiots rolled into the parts store with nine 55 gallon barrels or maybe a tad bigger ones on a single axel lawnmower trailer. The trailer jack was nearly dragging the ground, the trailer frame was obviously bent, and the truck was nearly dragging the ground. They decided the right course of action was to buy a taller hitch. Then the jack bent trying to jack it up and they couldn’t get it on the taller hitch. So then they had their hefty girl friends get on the truck tailgate to squat it enough to clear. Other then the obvious approach of making 2 trips they could have moved the barrels back and avoid most of the problems.

Sometimes I am amazed how dumb people can be about trailer loading, putting way too much or way too little on the tongue. To me it's obvious where the load should be centered but seems like some people think anywhere on the deck is fair game.

If there's still room on the trailer or pickup bed it's OK to keep throwing firewood on even though the axle is on the stops.

Sometimes you have to do it (wrong) to learn it. I have a small 4 x 8 trailer from before the HF popularity days. I've had to replace bearings and the plywood deck a few times, but the frame is still good. Capacity is said to be around 1200 pounds but I don't load it to that any more. Couple of years back, I need a bunch of concrete by the bag. Figured I could get twelve 80 pounders on it safely, spread out in three rows of four bags. First time, I put them mostly forward over the tongue since it was built stronger there. That was the only time I did it that way. The other four trips, I centered them over the axle.

1900 lbs GVW, properly centered, 2k GVW rated 4x8 trailer (and tow vehicle).

100 freeway miles @ 60 mph to home, next morning another 100 miles half freeway then 2-lane to reach my orchard. Uneventful. When I left the place where I loaded it I tried some minor slow zig-zags to see if it wanted to steer me - no effect. After that I was more concerned about the 108 degree weather so I stopped occasionally to feel the tires and wheel bearings. Didn't find anything excessive. And I travelled when there was near nobody on the road. Yes it's chained front and rear!

No drama at all.

What kind of trailer is that? I see them around and they look more solid than the average trailer that size. I like the removable sides, sometimes it's better to not have them.

I love this little trailer.

Snow Bear, no longer in business. From Eastern Canada, sold by Home Depot 15 years ago. I suspect these were sold as snowmobile trailers there because the deck tilts, also the floor is corrugated steel in the center 1/3, then plywood on the left and right thirds. The front and rear panels have angled pins that drop into angled chassis holes, turn them around and they make the deck extend flat 2.5 ft each end. Also the tongue extends to double its length, handy to get clear of that front deck extension. (photo, extended). I once hauled a rolled 16 ft carpet with no rear overhang. (Front end lashed up by the hitch).

Rated GVW 2k. Empty weight is 500 lbs with the panels in place or 400 lbs bare flat deck. Tires are rated 1050 lbs and springs 1100 (each) so with some weight on the tongue I'm very slightly over weight in this photo. That trip was 20 miles of slow, back country roads, bringing home the second Yanmar YM286D. (This one has loader and power steering). I handled this trip like a permit load, slow and cautious because it was over rated weight. Again, nervous but no drama.

And a winch I set up to dump. This shows the sloping panel pins that allow the front/rear panels to be flipped over to become deck extensions.

I think that my father had a Snow Bear snowplow for his Ford Ranger, it's too bad that they are no longer around.
