I’d have done that aside from the one strap. The 5550 can easily haul 5 tons. The truck isn’t even squatting. Those look like 19.5 wheels. The ones on my truck are rated at 4500 pounds apiece in duels it 5000 single.

You missed the point. Have as big of camper that you want. Just don’t pull it with a 1/2 ton truck.
Walk around the campground. It's amazing what people do with half tons. Heck, I saw a caravan pulling an 18' tt. Caravan!

Industrial,

Why do you care how someone else spends their money?

You sure are getting your panties in a wad over something that's really none of your business.

Go do what you like, and let others do as they like.

Seriously, how is this hurting or affecting you in any way?

If you can buy a huuuuge camper, you SHOULD be able to buy a suitable truck to pull it.

Very true. And I NEVER condone pulling something that overloads your truck's rated capacity. Not just what you can "get away with", but what the truck is actually rated to pull.

However it sounds like Industrial is walking through life with a big chip on his shoulder for folks that want to spend their money differently than he thinks they should. That is what I'm wondering about, like what business of his is it if someone wants a nice RV, and how often they have to use it to satisfy him?

Really?

Massachusetts State Police

What could go wrong? ... Yesterday morning, Trooper Christopher Kaszyk of the Massachusetts State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section was on patrol on Route 58 in Carver when he observed a Dodge RAM 5500 truck carrying a medium-sized excavator estimated to weight about 10,500 lbs. In addition to exceeding the truck's acceptable gross vehicle weight rating by 4,450 lbs., the excavator was secured with just one 3-inch strap (with an estimated securing capacity of 3,000 lbs., or less than one-third of the weight of the excavator it was holding in place). The driver was fined for those violations as well as for the weight on the rear axle exceeding the tire ratings, having an expired expiration sticker,a missing wheel fastener, and having no warning flag on the projecting load. Because of the public safety hazards posed by the truck, Trooper Kaszyk placed it out of service until the excavator could be off-loaded.

Wish they would start clamping down on this kind of thing up here. It's pretty rampant. Excavators, and especially skid steers for some reason. See them going down the road all the time without a single tie down, not even straps, let alone the proper chains and binders. I guess it's going to have to take a few fatalities related to unsecure loads before NDOT starts paying attention to it.

Neighbor bought a massive motorhome - heck, maybe nicer than my house but my thoughts are I hope it brings them great joy and they have a blast with it. I think it is great they got something they enjoy. Not something we need, but we have a Jeep that a lot of people may think is silly..... Too stay on topic - our friends often tow their little car behind the motorhome but of course they use the correct hitch!

I 'almost' bought a Polaris RZR after visiting my BIL in Phoenix and messing around with his... was ready to buy and tow it home to WA state but I found that although his is street legal in AZ, it isn't in my county here. Meaning I would have to tow it to use it. Lots of backroads and trails around here but the last thing I want is not to just jump in and go! Towing anything is not fun in my mind and one should know what they are doing!

Seems there ought to be some good tutorials/instructions somewhere on towing/hauling various things. If there is, point to links... thanks!

This guy was able to fit his in the back of his truck!

My buddy has plates and insurance on his Polaris and legally drives it on the road. It’s safer than a motor cycle IMO.
