From other discussions I have seen,, using straps to tie down ANY machine is cause for an instant ticket in some states,,
I would never use straps for a machine that large,, only chains,, but,, that is me,,

I have also seen guys say you need to be careful about running straps across a bucket,, it will make the strap fray,, - :confused2:
The only way I would use a strap is to hold the hood down, or keep the doors closed,, but, that is me,,, :)

^^^^^^ I TOTALLY AGREE !!!
That is an accident in search of a place to happen.

Sold a tractor today. Hauling Guy that came to fetch it had an unusual way to strap it down lol and was unprepared to haul the tractor.

I suggested to him, 2 straps on front, one around the axle just behind both front tires and a 3rd strap on the drawbar with a shackle. Then one strap on the bucket sitting on the pallet forks with back pressure to the forks.

He fished one strap threw the loader cross member, after I verbally suggested I wouldn’t do that because it could be hard on the loader pistons if the tractor moves. He put two straps diagonally across the bucket. He had a puzzled look on his face on the rear, I asked if he had a shackle and he said he didn’t, so I got in my car and gave him one for the drawbar.

I gave him a plastic bag and some zip ties to cover the exhaust since it’s front facing and tractor has a turbo. I even gave him zip ties to secure his slack straps because he didn’t bring tape or zip ties lol.

He had a real nice rig though, dually tandem trailer pulled behind a newer F350 I believe.

Running those straps down and hooking them like they are can easily be a problem also. Get a little slack in the strap and the hook turns loose. Always best to poke the strap hooks through the rub bar and then hook them back on top of the rub bar. That way even if the strap gets some slack it still stays hooked up.

That whole tie down job is a joke. The rear can slide all around the place. I agree the bucket and cross tube might cut the strap and I would also just use chains and binders.
Sad thing is it was probably fine and the guy will continue on ignorant as usual
Why would that be sad?
At least in that case some innocent bystander was not hurt by the cluster f...

I’d abandon the straps all together. They’re too likely to get cut. Sometimes I use straps to secure additional implements but they always get protection under them. It’s legal not to for equipment under 10,000 pounds but I usually use 4 chains. And he hooked the straps wrong. They should be hooked so that can’t come off if they get slack. If you’re in Canada you’ll have to do something else because straps aren’t allowed outside the rub rail. IMG_7849.JPGIMG_7851.JPG]

That is an urban legend, please stop spreading it unless you can find the law that says that.
I have looked and asked around and the ONLY place under US law where straps are not allowed for cargo securement is when hauling crushed cars.
ANY other place, straps are allowed as long as they are heavy enough to meet the weight requirements of the load.
Now, a police officer on the side of the road may not like them and find an excuse to give you a ticket, but there is no law that I have been able to find prohibiting using properly rated straps to tie down cargo.

You’re right that crushed cars are the only thing straps aren’t legal for. But a lot of people aren’t smart enough or care enough to use straps without cutting them and should stick to chains.

There are a lot of people not smart enough to vote.....
But for some reason they are still allowed to

Let’s put that fairly minor issue aside and look at the fact that you have to have a license to attempt to catch fish but anyone can have kids.

That is really interesting about straps not being outside the rub rail. Makes perfect sense. They can get sheared off by a bundh of different means.

I figure they’re a lot more likely to become loose and fall off vs being sheared off and it’s legal to loop them in the US. Plus it’s low hassle hookup. You don’t have to worry about it falling off while you walk to the other side of the trailer.
