This truck pulled in front of me today. I suppose he put the longer boards on top so they could come out easily. At the next intersection he went through as the yellow turned to red so I was safely behind him. 20191220_154351.jpg

The article claims he was towing the 53' trailer with a standard issue 1/2 ton. The pics clearly show 8 lug wheels so its either 3/4 or 1 Ton (not that it makes it safer) I'd guess he got tickets for unregistered trailer and overweight load. I also doubt a SMV sign is legal for this purpose.
As I recall, from conversation on another forum he got ticketed for not having brakes, improper use of a slow-moving vehicle sign for a vehicle moving faster than 25 miles an hour, and I think something else but I can't remember what.

The article posted said he made his own air braking system. Not sure how he applied them. And yes, he could get a ticket going over 25 using a SMV sign. My neighbor uses a SMV on one of his small utility trailers instead of registering it. I have told him many times not to go over 25 towing that trailer.

I never tow faster than 225, just seems safer that way !

What about the little Burro, Casita, etc fiberglass 'egg' camp trailers? For towing with a light vehicle (Outback etc) do those tow better than a teardrop trailer, and last longer?
We sold the mid 1970s 13' Boller a couple years ago after upgrading to a 17' Casita. I'm totally sold on the solid fiberglass shell camper.

My wife towed the 13' safely behind a Geo Tracker back in high school. We sold it for $3.5k too in desperate need of a remodel. Hands down you wont find a trailer that will last longer. I can't imagine towability between a teardrop & egg being much. The eggs are traditionally pretty low. Easy to get in & tow behind a small sedan, albeit at the expense of offroad ability.

I'm not clear if airstreams have a wood stick built frame or something aluminum. But they do have tons of seams to leak. Fiberglass stands up to hail way better too. Seen a few pockmarked airstreams around here.IMG_20150605_141928.jpgimage%20(22).jpg

Airstreams are all aluminum. My current client has a 27’ one that he tows with a Colorado. Thing was probably 100k at least. It is nice inside.

The wooden floor in fiberglass campers is the Achilles's heel. I think Airstream floors are wood, as well.

Our Trillium is fibreglass on the bottom. Wood inside but fibreglass under it. It’s a 74 and no leaks anywhere since there’s nowhere to leak.

Not sure how others are built.
