They can be trusted - up to a point. You can't treat them like a chain pocket and expect them to hold anything more than fairly light, convenience type of loads.

It's a 2017 Silverado so should be relatively rust free. I was quite surprised when it let go, and instinctively ducked.. I wasn't even putting on a lot of tension when it snapped; just trying to snug the skis of the snowsled up to the front of the truck.

I'm also using a 10,000 lb ratchet strap; I won't even give storage space to anything smaller.

You deserve it. For something built for “work” a pickup bed is useless. That test in discussion is about like comparing a glass mason jar vs a piece of pvc pipe to contain a grenade.
