Maybe I mentioned this earlier but I once (1970's) bought an Int'l H that was stuck way back in the brush and had to be winched out so I hired a guy. At home, late at night, we backed it into my huge 1700's post and beam barn and went inside to get the cash. I was going to help the guy unload it with a loader.

Anyway, on the way back out I heard the squealing tires on my spongy wooden barn floor as he chained the tractor to the upright posts and floored the truck. I believe the tractor was suspended in mid air for a nanosecond as the trailer cleared the falling tractor. I was speechless because I felt it could have pulled the post out that was just sitting on a rock. "Nah", he said, "do it all the time".

I'm thinking metal fatigue over the years that opened up gradually and became more visible after the last haul. It doesn't look like anything sudden.

Looks like hammering on that latch probably didn’t help it any either.

I replaced it with a much better hitch. Replaced the jack also. Safety chain attachment also changed out. This chain attachment sure beats the weld on bent pins that I have seen in use. Way better than actually welding the chains on, which I think will not pass a inspection.

As good a thread as any I guess ..... Are some commercial semis exempt from weigh stations?

I passed one today that was Open. Data scanners out over the roadway to read transponders, but all trucks were entering. Except this one typical 18 wheel tanker truck (nothing outwardly different) sailed right past the entrance. Marked units at the scale didn't come out after him. Unit too busy? Didn't notice him? Some signal via the data system to pass him? Maybe one of those special government loads that isn't supposed to stop anywhere?
