I wish I had a picture. Guy left Lowe's with a load of lumber. Most of it over 12 feet long. Some 16 foot and more 8 foot. Loaded the longest on the bottom with the other on top. With tailgate up and the end of lumber under the tool box. Went about 1/2 mile to a stop and turned left. Lumber shifted and not enough bolts holding tool box in. Tool box flew up with all the tools. Lumber went across 2 lanes of traffic and about 50 feet before he could stop. So it was a great site. Tool box and tools everywhere, along with the lumber. I am not sure what he did, as I couldn't stop and there was no way two people were going to pickup the half full tool box and without bolting it back in, there was no way to hold the lumber in.

Didn't know about all that. Was thinking of some stress related stuff.
My stress has been largely related to 40 years using Skoal, Copenhagen and Grizzley tobacco, my wife almost died of bacterial meningitis January 2020, while living in the hospital I stopped dipping but I have vocal cord erosion that hurts like an ulcer in my esophagus (from acid reflux) and a tumor in the left side of the neck that is yet to be determined what the heck it is. So pile up a 27 year marriage almost ending and now dealing with (luckily) mild brain damage and thinking that I may die of stuff inflicted stupid while the company I work for (Western Pa. Nuclear power plant) is nearly shutting down. Yeah, I'm stressed. All I need to do is get Dana stabilized and secure, then live forever or die fast while I'm still under the 1.25 million policy of my employer. I'm literally worth way more dead than alive, but I still need to get her past this crap show. After that, take me Lord. I'm ready to come home.

Cross chaining is just hooking the left chain to the right side of the hitch and the right chain to the left side of the hitch.

It is a DOT rule

If you were running short on length you could increase the tie down angle by doing it but if you can achieve the recommended 45 degree chain angle without it what’s the point? I can’t reach the far side of my machine from the ground so cross chaining would add effort to chaining down. For machines less than 10000 pounds you don’t even have to have 4 chains. I do agree that 4 chains is better than 2 but 2 chains of adequate capacity gets the job done.

I think we may be talking about two different things
I am referring to hitch chains to the tow vehicle

Yes I was talking about cross chaining the equipment to the trailer like this which I don’t see any point in for most applications. IMG_9087.JPG

I certainly misunderstood, I thought you were talking about crossing your tie-downs.A lot of people don't realize you are supposed to cross them.. My brother has been towing trailers on a regular basis all of his life, but didn't realize it. Instead he twisted them up so they wouldn't drag on the road; I'm not sure if that would cause problems if he needed them or not. They're like a fire extinguisher anyways, you hook them up but hope that you never need them.
