I did something similar pulling into a parking garage in one of my first pickups with a brand-new canoe on top. Clearance was only 7 feet and I was at 7'2... it bent the metal gunwales but fortunately was still usable.

If I haul anything that is near a worrisome height, I write my height on 4"x6" piece of cardboard and stick on the steering wheel in front of the dash. It is constantly in view and so far has prevented me from being on the news at 11:00.

Same cardboard sign with "no oil" on it when I change my oil. I would never forget but the wife doesn't always connect hood up and parts all over to something to be wary of.

My sign would have to read "Don't drive it!" and hide the keys, since my wife would probably dismiss "no oil" as a mere suggestion.
