The center of gravity has to behind the rear wheels by a good amount. which would make for handling issues above what an 8 ft bed truck would experience.

Yep, my 2006 Sierra 2500 has Eight.

I think that is a 5-1/2.

Tailgate is down to support the back end weight, so you should be okay.
There would be some rocking backwards onto the tailgate given the strap downs up front.

The front tires are cinched down with tire straps. The rear straps look to bigger than those '1000lbs' ones you get in a 4 pack and are there mainly to keep the rear from bouncing side to side.
