That's identical to driving the north/south length of California. We're one of the larger states. And like you note is it is extremely rare for an individual to make that particular trip. Commercial trucker, not so rare, lots of farm produce from Mexico is trucked north.
I think American's ignorance of European Russia is a Cold War relic. The 'Iron Curtain' was a barrier to communication and understanding for a couple of generations. Like how North Korea is not well understood now.
