If I see crap like that on the road with me, I'm usually wondering if it's safer to be in front vs the danger of trying to pass him/her/it, or should I be lagging behind at a safe (?) distance to pick up the pieces...
He was only going 40 on the freeway. I was 13 hours into my day and wanted that truck parked so I could go home. I wasn't going to follow him.

Yeah but 14 is the limit. I do it most days. You can't drive over 11 of that but I make so many stops there's no way for me to drive 11.

That is probably why I survived.
Thank You.

As I got onto the highway after work last friday afternoon, the Buick Regal in the right lane going 70mph right in front of me was ejecting some plastic parts out from underneath it. So I spooled up the turbos and quickly shot around him before anything could hit my truck. Couldn't believe what I saw, this dude's entire front bumper assembly was completely underneath the front of the car, and his grills, fog lights, bumper cover, supports, etc were just being shredded to bits on the concrete highway. Did he rear end the crap out of someone and then just speed away? My only guess.

Can you imagine the sound it must have been making in the car? And he's just driving straight ahead at 70 like nothing is wrong. Didn't react at all to my quick wave of panic to him, so I just sped off.

We saw similar on a hot summer afternoon. Some fool crazy on drugs passing a line of 40mph traffic, at 80-90mph and dodging the cars in the oncoming lane. With a front wheel ground down to about the lug bolts. Looked like a comet with sparks flying everywhere.

And a minute later, CHP with siren also passed us, chasing him. :D

I recently witnessed a car suddenly swerve, pull hard right and go up an embankment with its left front wheel taking off across the 2-lane highway; the car rolled a couple times and ended up on its back.

My guess in this case was that the wheel was loose and cause a loss of control and as the car suddenly swerved hard right (possibly by driver action - if so, kudos to him for taking one for the team and avoiding a head-on collision, almost makes up for not realizing his lug nuts were so loose in the first place) it came off. Luckily it went completely across the oncoming lane without hitting anyone and ended up in the trees there.

My wife (nurse) kept the guy talking and kept the other eager civilian rescuers from cutting him loose out of his seat belt until the EMS got there - after a crash like that you don't want to move a person at all without a backboard let along dump a guy on his head...
