"yeah, sorry, sort of had a mishap with the tractor you loaned me....accidentally turned it over and broke both my kid's legs"

"yeah? That sucks, id like my tractor back plus payment on whatever you broke when it turned over. Thanks."

Funny, as I just left an attorney's office downtown...
The kind of person whom I would lend my tractor to, doesn't sue people, at least not the person that loaned it to them.

Oh my. Tony, you are lucky I'm not a cruel sonofa. I was going to make up a name and claim to be from your town in S.C. Then I thought about making a post about some schmuck that just moved in next door and wants to borrow my stuff. I'm sitting here by myself laughing almost hysterically because I could almost see your face as you read it. You're lucky that I'm mellowing out in my old age.

Be a good neighbor and see what happens. If he sees you struggling with something and he is half as nice a guy as you are, he'll lend you a hand.

It must be a bit different where you guys live. I like my neighbors fine and I would be glad to help out with anything they needed or asked. One of the reasons people live out in the country where I live is that they like the isolation. We have a small country store/gas station in the nearest town. If I dont see my neighbor in that store we might go for a few years without talking. I like my neighbor he is a nice guy but he does his own thing and I do mine. The people that I know that go over to other peoples house for coffee and to hang out all live in the suburbs.

I have a third intrest in a wood splitter and will never-never do that again.
One of the co-owners got drunk and beligerent with another and also damaged the splitter frame and valve and just left it in an open field available to steal, so that partner just bought up the others share (he ownes two-thirds now.) They are no longer on speaking terms. The splitter is stored in his garage since I have no storage shed yet. Now that partner has medical problems (bad feet) and cannot/ does not use the splitter, and I don't go get it to use because I have guilt feelings about storing equipment at his place when I have just a minor share.
The next time I see him I am going to suggest we sell it and split the value-then I will buy one all on my own and store it under a tarp.

Issues of ownership buyout and storage should be considered before getting in bed with your neighbors. I don't understand why you can't get your wood ready to be split and go get it, and when your done, take it back. You probably understand the situation more than us, but when I own a share in something, I am probably going to use it.
I say that, and I actually purchased half interest in a new table saw that I didn't use for the first 10 years. However, I did enjoy the fruits of it, as my FIL would build things for my family with wood I brought back from Daddy's. We have some pretty nice chests and things made from the cedar grown on Daddy's place, crafted by my wife's Dad, which brings double sentimental value. When my FIL passed, the saw became mine.
I would think communications and advanced planning is the key to most of the problem solving with co-ownership.
