As I said before, call the manufacturer and they will tell you how to identify whether it is open center or closed center.

Whenever you are messing with the post pounder, does the tractor PRV ever activate?

Where is the hyd supply for the pounder coming from? From the FEL PB, or a remote valve?

Where is the return from the post pounder going to?

Does the post pounder valve have PB?

On page 50 of the owners manual, they show a supply hose G-17 as the supply hose, and G-20 as the return hose.

There is a hex plug beside the return port.

They should have used the supply to the pounder valve and the PB out to the 3pt, and a cyl return hose to the tank. Not sure what is under the hex plug.

Does the hyd valve have a brand name and model # on it ?

My Test: When tractor is running, oil should be bypassing back to sump at a fairly rapid flow. It's not.

A pretty good indication that a closed center plug is installed in the driver's valve. Given a proper supply of oil from the tractor's remote valve through the couplers to the Shaver valve.

If you are thinking this valve used as a closed center valve, there will be no flow in the out port until the cyl is stroked, as the pressure just waits at the valve for the lever to direct the fluid to the cyl.

So in a closed center circuit, there will be no flow through the return port except when the fluid is pushed out by the stroke of the cyl.

Here is a basic closed center circuit.

I would open the hex plug and see if the hex screw is screw in.

What I think will happen if a closed center valve is used in an open center hyd system is this. In neutral, the flow is blocked, so the relief would activate as soon as the pump is running. The pressure should jump up to the FEL valve PRV and start screaming.

A hyd gage would check all this out.

I did call manufacturer. Standard configuration is open center valve, however, they also make it in the closed configuration. I'm not sure how to physically determine which configuration I have besides some of the very basic tests I already performed.

I'm not sure if the PRV (pressure relief valve, right?) is activating. I'm not sure how to check as I'm fairly new in diagnosing hydraulics.

The presssure line is connected to a quick coupler in the back of the 656. The remotes were tested using my 2000 IH loader and they work fine.

The return line is plumbed and goes directly back to the sump, where the dipstick is put into the tank.

I'm not sure if the valve has a PB as I'm not sure what "PB" stands for.

The valve is a Gresen. I will check on the model number tomorrow.

I truly appreciate the help and knowledge you are sharing with me JJ.

What is supplying hyd to your 3pt.

I was going to ask you the color of your valve, as the Prince is black and the Gresen is red. Do you have the 3 lever valve?

PB is power beyond, and is used with open center valves.

Some hyd valves come as open center with or without PB, where the fluid is flowing all the time the tractor is running. Some of the valves can be converted to closed center, and the closed center valves are used mostly with variable speed valves. Basically, the fluid just sits there waiting to be used.

The valve you have is convertible, and they will ask you how it is configured. I am guessing the screw is in the port under the hex lug. I believe blocking that port make it a closed center valve

If that valve were to be used as an open center valve, the screw would be screwed in to separate the OUT flow from the hyd fluid to the next valve. The return port would go to tank, and the PB out would go to the next valve, which should be the 3pt.

The tractor is supplying hyd to the remotes on the back of the 656. I then have the Gresen valve plugged into the remote. Then the valve goes to the cylinder in the pounder. (Return goes back to the sump on the tractor.) I'm not sure if that answered your question or not.

The valve is red, which should be the Gresen valve. It has one lever on it. I will post some pictures tomorrow after I take them in the sunlight.

So to convert this valve from closed center to open center, I'd just have to remove a screw? Or do I need to order a new part?

Look for pictures tomorrow JJ. As always, thanks!

To convert from closed center to open, remove a long plug and install a short one. The HD-10 operator's manual is linked here:

http://www.shavermfg.com/downloads/HD-10-operator-manual.pdf

The single spool valve is on page 50. Remove the proper plug and tell us how long it is. The open center plug will be flat at the base of about 1/2-3/4" of threads. The closed center plug will have a longer tit on the end opposite the hex. Alternatively, Blow air into the supply hose with the control lever in neutral. If air comes out the return hose, the valve is set up for open center hydraulics.

wfd2,

You say you are running the return from the Gresen valve to the sump. How does the fluid get to the sump? Through the remote valve, or directly from the Gresen valve to the sump.

Do you have the hyd supply and return line plugged into the remote?
