Shed for lawn tractor, nailed to dirt hillside

I think it was a grand experiment on the fairly cheap. Why over-think it or try to second guess everything. Let's just wait and see...

Overthink? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

hey that’s where the fun is

When the dang thing’s all built and keeping the rain off it gets kinda boring.

That's what happens when we post stuff like this. It opens us up for all sorts of "expert advice". Some is welcomed, some not so much...

It looks like a fun idea really. Maybe this summer keep an eye out for some pavers for a base anyways. A little bit of fabric, some gravel for drainage and a layer of block will be friendlier for the underside of the lawn tractor.

So when it does rain, where does the rain that falls on the hill side above the roof edge go? Down onto the roof? Under the roof edge? Just wondering. Jon

Looks like a fun project. My only concern would be, like Eddie mentioned, was laying 2x4 like that, it will sag. Even on edge, with that span, it will probably sag. I'd at the least put another 2x4 on edge under it to make it a cross-sectional T shape or an inverted L shape, and glue and screw it. That simple spline running the length of the flat 2x4 will increase the strength by a ridiculous amount while not costing too much or affecting the aesthetics.

I'd just put down pavers with a tarp or heavy sheet of plastic for the base. Rocks are harder to contain. Pavers would be easier to relocate later if you decide to change this shed or move it around since it is a bit experimental.

Adding a sidewall would help support the roof and give a lot more protection to the JD. If you get much wind, you might get some uplift on the roof as it is. I don't know how you tied the rafters to your support posts. Simpson Strong ties would help if you see the need for additional reinforcement.

You know if it would be helpful, we could pop by with a 12 pack- stand around and stare at it. ;)

That’s half the fun (after its all done of course). Raining right now, and the tractor’s dry after 5(!) years uncovered.

The rain that misses the roof falls on the hillside as it has done since the hill was made (50years ago?). Its some heavy fill with gravel in it. Real hard stuff, the weeds will cover it quickly.

I agree with Eddie.
This would do it and not affect the external appearance.

The rafter has 6 inch long screws coming down into the end grain of the posts from the top.

Pavers on sand on plastic is probably a good way.

Here's a couple pics after 2 years.
I ran 120v to the shed for a trickle-charger.

Ya gotta watch out with those HarborFreight trickle chargers, if the power goes out the LED remains on and trickle-drains your battery.
I put a diode inline. Which reduces the voltage a little, but the safety that an oopsy can't drain my battery is worth it.
Haven't put down pavers or gravel.
That's been on the list for 2 years.

purlin bowed up .25%22 aug'24.jpg

The purlins had a slight bow, so I installed them bow-up.
2 years later I think it's about the same as it was.
But in any case... it's not sagging yet.
