If you are that concerned of keeping diesel on site, perhaps you are a good candidate to consider buying an electric tractor? However there is the concern of electrical fires to be reckoned with....

Ever come to mind how many houses wid oil heat store over a ton #2 oil inside house without spill container?
These tanks must be replaced by law every 10 years. There is great difficulty with house insurance if you still have tanks stored inside. They rust from the inside out. You do NOT want that smell in your house!

I just bought a tractor, and want to keep 100 gallons of diesel to run the tractor.

I plan on using two, 55 gallon, steel barrels, and plan to build a shed to keep the snow and water off of the barrels. Plus, I want to get the fuel away from the house, so if there is a fire, it's not a nightmare.

I'd like to put something under these two barrels so if they started leaking, I wouldn't have an environmental disaster.

What can I use as a floor that will support the barrels, not rot out, and contain a spill until I could clean it up?

Or should I just put them on patio blocks, and replace the barrels every two years?

I know I don't want them on bare dirt.

Use plastic Barrels making sure bung gaskets are good. Leave an inch or so for expansion and bleed air out on a hot day. Use a screened funnel when transferring fuel. Depending on your area, there is Summer and Winter Grade fuel. See your Dealer.

Many house fires with fuel tanks in the basement most of the time are still full of fuel when the fire is out.
The fuel will support combustion but is really quite safe.
Most horror stories are just that stories.
Was not a horror story, I live nearby and saw the before and after.
Also had visited that home a few times so this is first hand info.

I'd like the idea of plastic 45 gal drums sitting on drip trays that they use for hot water tanks.
Naturally you'd want to plug the overflow hole.

I mentioned earlier that I have always stored my fuel in plastic with 0 bad effects.

My insurance just asked the capacity of the different tanks,
1 buried and 1 in the basement, I did mention that both had fire stop valves on them.

Cut the very top off a plastic IBC tote and put your barrel down inside the base.

Keep it in the aluminum frame and use your forks to move it around. Couple of tie down straps to hold it in place in the frame.
