about the only thing that will even slow down a cutting torch is stainless steel, stainless is very difficult, nearly imposible with some alloys, to cut with a torch. reason is that cutting torches cut by heating the metal to its kindling point then blasting it with oxygen which makes the metal burn, oxidize technicaly, and adds heat to help the cutting proccess, the problem with stainless is it can take more heat than regular steel and also it doesnt oxidize as easily so that of course makes it not cut well

If you have the money 2- 20' containers work out better than 1- 40'er. The problem with the 40'er is that stuff has a way of piling up from the front to back over time, limiting access and making it hard to crawl over to get to the stuff in back. It takes less time to throw everything out of a 20'er to get to the stuff in the back. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Phil -

Those prices are HIGH!

Some of these container re-sellers refurbish used equipment and mark up a bit - sounds like quite a bit where you are.

I was recently quoted $1400/20ft and $1200/40ft cont byt company called Container-It which is a subsidiary of Maersk Lines.

If you purchase direct from SS Lines, you may have to do a little work on the container, but can usually get it for less money.

Most people need to also know that a 20ft dry cont weighs in at appx 5000lbs, while a 20ft reefer cont weighs in at appx. 6800lbs.

Once these are delivered special equipment is usually required to move or remove also.

Check Baltimore and Philly ports also. Truckers are usually less expensive and used container demand may be lower too (cheaper)

I'm in the international shipping business and purchased 40ft surplus container recently out of Baltimore, and had it delivered to Annapolis area for one of my clients. $1100 for the cont and $250 for the delivery.

Call Container-it @ 888-471-9099 to check their inventory avail.

Yeah, 1bush2hog, those prices seemed high to me too. I think I've about decided to get a large "carport" structure instead of the container (they have demo units all over the place). I'm kinda remote so locks won't do much good anyway because they could cut them off at their leisure. My best security is the retired neighbors' homes that must be driven by to get to our parcel. It's an advantage to having easement through another parcel, unlike the threads in "rural living" about easements through a TBN'rs property.

And considering the points mentioned here about stuff piling up in the deeper recesses of the container, just having a roof over the PT and implements will be fine. Maybe a 25' by 30' carport would give me room to put the tractor in the middle and pallets of stuff around 3 sides.

I have quite a few expensive machine tools, motorcycles and other toys here at the farm.

My best deterrent is my 5 dogs and my .270 Weatherby along with my .41 Ruger Blackhawk. A thief would have to get a long way away as my .270 will reach out and touch someone at 1.5 miles. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif For close range, the .41 will drill right through and idiot. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Actually, the dogs keep people away even though all but one are cupcakes. People aren't sure. Just ask John Day. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's the NOT KNOWING that keeps them away from my tools and toys. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Flip; Your right about your dogs. You've most likely got some some of the nicest dogs around, but a stranger wouldn't know that would he? Sounds like your a better shot with that .270 than I would be! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

johnday said it, "neighbors, neighbors, neighbors". Your neighbors are the answer. I live in an isolated area and look after some of my neighbors property. Get one of your good neighbors to look after your place, give him a key if you can. Your bad neighbors are the ones that could break in. Your bad neighbors son, nephew or friend of the son or nephew are the bad people. Once the bad people know that the good neighbor is looking after your place they will often stay away just out of respect for the good neighbor. The good neighbor knows who the bad neighbors are usually. I know when a strange car is driving up and down this dirt road (usually 2 or more people) and I make a point to go to my neighbors place and be present if its only to leave my truck or tractor sitting in the drive that day, turn on a light, a radio, etc.

Do all the other security things but hook up with a neighbor you can trust to look after your place. Someone that can get things done and has time to look after your place.

Locks only keep the honest people out!!!

If your in a wooded area I would think about trying to hide with a camo net or something. I like the thought of pulling the front tires too, not to hard to do that. Hidden battery disconnect or pulling the battery is a good idea. But, if they don't know its there they won't be tempted.....

Sounds like you already P.O.d some neighbors. I live in a tourist area and there are companies that check camps every week for a fee. You might be able to work out a deal like that if you can't find any friendly neighbors.

For tractor security I have a different concept.

1. Make it hard to start. Turn off fuel, turn on PTO.

Remove battery

I also like the lojack idea. My greatest fun idea would be to find out who stold your tractor, wit until they leave, and drive your tractor out the side of their barn and back home.
