dgdave1 - Oil color is no indicator of the oils condition. Many diesels turn the oil black very quickly, it's just a diesel thing. :)

I'm seeing that a lot lately...the "large economy size" costs MORE per lb, oz, piece, etc., than the smaller sizes. Why?
I'd say part of it has to do with perception, most people percieve the larger quantity will be cheaper, so retailers take advantage by raising the price on a per unit basis, figuring most people will not catch on. I've noticed the same thing in supermarkets, often the larger size of a given product costs more per ounce or per unit than a smaller size container of the identical product.

My TC 29 New Holland makes the oil black within hours of changing. Is this normal? It runs fine, has 1200 hours on it. Has turned oil black quickly since new.

its more or less normal in a diesel engine.

also depends up to a point on the engine itself.
some of them have more nooks and crannies than others and not all the old oil comes out when you drain it.
