Re: She\'s Red, Automatic... & I bought her...

I love all those Jimmy Stewart movies.... /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

It has a "Western Auto" sticker on the bottom of the seat, with a "MTD" sticker and their "800" number, and packaged with an "MTD" owner's manual... and I bought it "new" (customer return-with a spotless underneath clean mowing deck) @ Home Depot...

So... we have lots of possibilities here... /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Re: She\'s Red, Automatic... & I bought her...

That is interesting. MTD doesn't list the brand on their website - of course neither does Frigidaire. I was going by some older info I had. Now days nobody knows who owns who /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif. This is from Frigidaire's Website:

<font color=blue> The new Electrolux Home Products (formerly Frigidaire Home Products) was formed January 1, 1997 by uniting three sister companies in the White Consolidated Industries/AB Electrolux family - American Yard Products, Frigidaire Company and Poulan/Weed Eater.

Combined, we are the leading North American manufacturer of gas-, electric-, and battery-powered handheld outdoor power equipment, lawn mowers and lawn and garden tractors. We are also a significant producer of major appliances for the home including refrigerators, freezers, ranges, dishwashers, washers, dryers, room air conditioners, and dehumidifiers. We have 18,000 team members at 14 locations and our brand names are some of the best known and respected: Frigidaire, Tappan, White-Westinghouse, Gibson, and Kelvinator in major appliances. Poulan, Weed Eater and Poulan Pro in lawn and garden products. Many of our products proudly bear the Sears Craftsman and Kenmore labels. We manufacture products for other leading retailers like Lowes, Home Depot, WalMart and Kmart.

Electrolux Home Products, a new name with new opportunities for leadership. </font color=blue>

Hope this doesn't confuse you too much, but man I'm sure confused now /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Re: She\'s Red, Automatic... & I bought her...

The overall appearence and the shape of the deck is very similar to the 16 horse Briggs powered--red---AYP---hydro transmission mower I bought sometime back.
John, it has a sheetmetal axle too and those wheels look smaller than a BX, fact is the BX can lift my AYD.
Surisslee, it has been a good little mower and the sheet metal axle has held up nicely mowing St Augustine, she is at my hanger back home and is used to mow the grass around the hanger and taxi area. Sears has a model very similar and the parts are interchangeable.
Got a new classification, below subcompact forget GT and LT--we got Tractor styled box store mowers /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif . J

Re: She\'s Red, Automatic... & I bought her...

John, is the transmission in your mower called "varispeed"?

I have an older Wizard mower made by MTD with the varispeed. It's actually a variable pulley, and is really handy to slow down and speed up while mowing.

Re: She\'s Red, Automatic... & I bought her...

I didn't see the words "varispeed", but I think it is a variable pulley/belt arrangement… and I believe I’ve seen “hydrostatic” in the owner’s manual. I earlier misspoke and said it “wasn’t hydro”… not in the sense of a compact tractor with HST… but the term “hydrostatic” has a very broad meaning…

MTD calls it different things… depending on “who’s lawn tractor” it’s on. It seems they use this same “system” on Troy-Bilt, Yardman, Yard Machine, White, Huskee, and probably another dozen or so “ private brand names”

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.troybilt.com/servlet/BrandProductDetail?ID=99&CAT=28&SUB=32>Here’s a Troy-Bilt almost identical to mine…</A>

It’s interesting marketing how a change of color, cosmetics, grille work, etc.… plays a big part in merchandising these things with a broad array of prices that fall all over the spectrum… /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

Re: She\'s Red, Automatic... & I bought her...

The picture looks like my Yard Man mower by MTD. Same front axle, deck looks the same, controls look the same, seat looks the same. They have sold a blue million of these with different bodywork under several brand names. Mine is ugly green and yellow but has given excellent service for three years, except for the time I tried to mow over a 6" stump.

Re: She\'s Red, Automatic... & I bought her...

John,
I've got a question for you. What's a better value. A 1996 JD F935 front mount mower 72" with a 22hp diesel with 850 hours and the material collection system for $7500 or a 2000 JD 455 diesel with 259 hours and the material collection system for $8500?

Thanks

Richard:
I can't help thinking you're trying to set ol' JMIII up some way with the question: <font color=blue>"What's a better value. Of course, when I read your post carefully, you do refer only to value, not how well they cut the lawn.
My comparables are both old, but a 72" front mower on an old Jacobsen Turf Cat II is so much better than the Kubota B7100 with belly mower, that I wouldn't ever consider anything but a front mount or a ZTR if all I'm doing is lawn quality finish mowing. I suspect your experience is the same, unless there is some drawback in the F935 that I don't know about. So, you're planning some king of three-way swap to trade up through the lawn tractor to a 4wd front mower, right?
