Be careful. You almost have to go through a company. The company is who carries the insurance. Most owner operators are insured through the company they are leased to.If it isn't a company load it isn't insured. Make sure to get a copy of their certificate of insurance. Take lots of pics before shipping. Make sure there are dates on the pics. There are a lot of crooks out there. I would rather pay more for a reputable company than pay less and have your tractors disappear.

Actually, I got "all hazard" insurance on my tractor before shipping. Cost about $250 per year and since I was using the tractor in an urban location where I had to leave it out all the time, I just kept the insurance up.

My agent and I had a lengthy discussion about this and he convinced me that this would cover the tractor if it was stolen or damaged in a transportation accident. For the money I paid, it was well worth it to have a company who would pay for damage to the tractor up front and then fight the endless battle with the carrier's insurance company over what they cover and what they don't, and how many months it will take to get a check.

I have had good luck with SAIA, which is a regional LTL trucking company. Not knowing where you are located (thanks iPhone app).....

Also, never dealt with them, but a guy from church works here: www.freightquote.com. They offer LTL brokering

I don't recall if you mentioned how large the tractors were, but you might pop into a few car lots, and ask them for names of car haulers. I am thinking the smaller rigs that can haul two or three cars at one time. This would probably be your best bet. Setup for the load, plus they do it for a living.

Good luck.

What size is the tractors (ie weight, height, width and lenght)? A couple of lawn tractors are a long way from a couple of 7710's. My Ford 7710 cost me $250 to move it across town, but mostly because the company selling it required $2mil insurance for them to load it on their property, and the fact that it was 13' 3" wide. In this case, the lenght and width and weight didn't matter, as it was a short move, by a dedicated piece of equipment. (Landoll) however, you might get lucky with a couple of hotshots, if the tractors aren't too big. I could probably haul two 5-6K tractors on my fifth wheel trailer if they weren't too long, ie loaders and backhoes attached, etc.
I would like to make the trip, but my sister who lives out there is coming here next week, so I think I will pass on making that sort of trip.

I would have to have that in writing. I can understand being covered if you are transporting it but someone else? Insurance companies don't want to pay for any thing they don't legally have to.

We have to ship 2 tractors to Florida for a friend.
Is there a web site that all the truckers post on when they need a load.
For example, they are sitting in Ca and their truck is empty and they want a load to go back with.
All I can find are middle men and brokers that want a fortune. All we want is to deal with the drivers.
:D

Make a trip to your local truck stop. Ask some of the drivers who are sitting there with their diesels idling or who are chowing down in the onsite pigout palace. Also check with the guys/gals at the weighing station and at the truck wash. Look for notes, business cards posted on bulletin boards.
