I need an oil filter with the shortest can for my YM186D.

The (optional) power steering cylinder hits the oil filter occasionally and has dented it. I'm concerned the filter will get punctured.

What's on there now is the standard Hoye filter. Anything a quarter inch shorter would be better.

I recall #1334 and 1064 were suitable for the YM Yanmars but I don't recall which was shorter. I think the short one was #1334 and is the same filter used on my '99 Subaru.

Any advice?

EDIT - I hate to post misinformation. 1064 is shorter than 1334. Both were specified many years for Honda, Subaru etc so they are sold everywhere.

Can you get Sakura branded filters over there? They are little stumpy things and keep well away from everything. The Baldwin is 1" maybe more longer than the Sakura that i use. I find them readily available here and they work well on the YM's. I will look up and see what else they fit ( i think the number is C-1032 from memory)

1334 - 3.194"
1064 - 2.944"

but what about the valve pressure on those and the micron filtering on all those?

I left a web address at the bottom of my last post where you can look those up and check those. I don't know what the pressure or micron requirements are.

You guys are amazing! Those links led me to the information I needed.

I didn't know that Katahdin's #1365 existed. That one really is tiny, the diameter looks no larger than its sealing gasket and with 2.577" height it will easily give the clearance I need.

There is little difference in specs for those three filters. I'll buy a #1365.

With a smaller can this one must have less filter surface but with 50 hour filter changes it should be fine - considering that Yanmar specifies you can change the filter after 2~3 oil changes depending on use.

Thanks!

i see that the 1365&1334 by passes at 8-11 psi and the other 1064 bypass at 16 its possible that they will bypass when the latter is still filtering but if its bypassing you have a clogged filter and have mostlikely gone way over your oil change interval anyway, pointing out you dont care about your equiptment anyhow.

Yes, I saw that spec but didn't think it was relevant. I can't imagine running an oil filter - maybe for years - until oil won't pass through it.

Maybe the bypass spec is more significant for someone who runs single-weight oil below its intended range in cold weather?

good point on the oil....i would agree that is more likely, someone running say straight 30wt or something in alaska?
