Shot my neighbors dog

Linny was H88ll on critters. Probably 50 years since I read of mice and men... remember it like yesterday.

My vet does the service free of charge. More should. Better than shooting a loyal family pet.

$75 is the going rate around here, and $200 on a weekend

I think there is a difference between pets and livestock that only a farmer or hunter can understand.

I can kill and slaughter anything I know I'm going to eat, but best to have someone else put down a pet. Especially if you have kids!

Our vet has also let us know that this is his policy, simply because he said that he has seen people put off euthanizing an animal for too long, several times because they can't bring themselves to shoot it and don't have the money to have it put down humanely. He will even get rid of the carcass.

One of my least favorite tasks around the farm is taking care of old cows. I've mentioned before that I am a really bad farmer, because I treat most of my cows as pets. We tend to keep the old girls around far after they need to be kept. I am usually of the opinion that if the cow has been good and had pushed out 10 to 12 calves, I'll let them ride out their last few years in peace. It only costs me a little hay and a little medicine, and alot of time I'll end up getting one more calf out of them that basically makes more money than I would have gotten had I sold an old cow. I know that from a business perspective, I should sell them. But I also get to see them enjoying the pretty days and chewing their cud, and basically doing nothing. The real downside is that eventually they will get sick or injured, and usually can't stand up anymore. At that point, I'll have to do my duty and put them down. It's just part and parcel of farm living. I don't like it, but I do get the satisfaction of knowing that they had more good days than bad, and in the end I did my part to limit their suffering.

Good Post..and good attitude.

Years ago,my Louellen(sp) setter got bitten by a rattler in So_OH hills. His head on one side swelled up likened to a polar bear..... Vet couldn't do anything, but Benjy lived. A few weeks later he was acting strange, and actually bit my step-son,totally out of character for this fun-loving dog.
With a heavy heart I dug a grave in the woods and called him up to it. Shot him in the head with a 12 gauge, heavy shot, and he died instantly.
Linda still tells the tale of that dog standing up beside me while I was looking down into the F100 engine compartment, and Benjy looking down in there too, trying to see what I thought was so interesting.Ha! don-ohio :)^)

Sounded like you cared until you had to make it a point to describe this part. Was that part really called for in your explanation

I thought the same thing at first, but then remembered, everyone deals with grief in their own way. Many people try to use humor to deal with death. He may simply be trying to fight his own grief.

There's some sick people on this site. Maybe it's good that their guns are going to be taken from them.
