Shotgun shells

I was in Kansas last week and noticed 3" nitro mag 20ga shells have gone up as much as 5.00 a box at the Wally World in Dodge and 2 3/4 high brass up at least 3.00, I was just glad I didn't need shells for the week of Pheasant chasing.

I reload my own shells at about 3.25 a box of 25. I shoot about 300 a week so a couple of bucks a box saves me 20 bucks or so. I like to save money where I can, and I can custom load light or heavy as i need. I buy bulk primers, 5000 at a time, and I buy shot from a guy that melts his own from used wheel weights and other scrap lead. I buy Promo powder which is the lowest price right now, in 8 pound containers. Those are the 3 most expensive components so that's where I buy the cheap stuff. I re use the hulls until they are ruined. My reloader cost me 250 bucks 15 years ago and has paid for itself many times over. It takes about 5 minutes to load 25. I would not reload if I had to buy expensive supplies at Cabellas. There should be somewhere around you to buy shooting supplies at a reasonable price.

Local Aig store has 20 gauge shells on sale today for $5.69 a box... I'm going to buy a few boxes this afternoon.

Bottom line as others have stated - the price of lead. It's down some now, but still quite high.

Supply and demand. Demand is high right now as many have heard after Jan. 20 there will be a hugh ammunition tax imposed.

My wife says I don't get out enough. But I wanted to check and see what is going on. Usually around Thanksgiving, I get with some family members to kill clay pigeons. We have gone through 5 cases of these taste-less birds over the holidays before. I picked up a box of them today at Wally World and thought I would stock up on shells. I admit, I missed the shooting last year, so I have not purchased shotshells for two years. I was very surprised to see the usual brands going for $7-8 a box, (25 shells) (#8 shot). What has happened? I know 2 years ago they were half of that price. JC
