I made a carreer (2nd/3rd carreer????) out of buying, repairing as/if needed, and re-selling used equipment. Along the way I used much of it. (Hence my screen name) As that all played out, I've had the pleasure (in some cases) of experimenting with all sorts of implements and tractors. In some instances, the old equipment is capable of doing things that have no equal in modern product lines. In other instances, older stuff is behind the 8-ball. In any event, used equipment fits a niche market (lower priced options) Still, there was almost always one or two specific brands/models that were just simply better than their competitors offerings. Find them, and find 'em in good condition, and you have something worthwhile. I've spent the last 4 years tracking down Massey Ferguson implements that were compatible with my 150, from the same era, and that are in near mint condition. (example? That #39 2-row planter I hardly ever use) These are "museum pieces", albiet not in a museum. There's FAR better planters made since. I wouldn't dream of telling anyone they're better than what else is available, just that they're more interesting.
In the end, if I have to USE a piece of equipment, I want the highest quality available to me. That magic word (quality) is often associated with price to many folks. I've found out that isn't so in far too many cases. You don't always get what you pay for. And you don't alway have to pay the largest price to get what ends up being the best. And with that, if two items end up being each others equal, and one is less expensive, my vote for BEST would be the least expensive. I'm sure not out to impress anyone with how much I can throw away. LOVE my bargains.....
