Should I change to a two stage pump?

Hey one last question on this general topic. I am building this as I said using a horizontal drive motor. I have seen descriptions of the pumps that would lead me to believe that some of them can only be used in a horizontal configuration????

I have a spare 8hp vertical shaft motor off of an old riding lawn mower that I was thinking about fabbing up another log splitter with someday. Do I need to look for a special pump or is the shaft simply the wrong size? Do the bolts not line up? (or do certain pumps only work in certain orientations?)

Educate me!

I can't say for sure about the orientation, but here is the .pdf for the Haldex-Barnes 2-stage pumps. I didn't read it word for word, but I didn't see anything in there that mandated horizontal-only orientation. A quick call to their engineering department should clarify.

As for coupling the pump to the engine, I think the best way to go is to use a "lovejoy coupling". The shaft of your pump will likely be 5/8" keyed, and I would imagine your engine crankshaft is 1" keyed or larger. The Lovejoy coupler makes it easy. The "L" type is the one most commonly used. Just get a 5/8 half for the pump, and a 1" (or whatever the proper size of your crankshaft) for the engine, and the spider, and you're good to go.
