Should I Use A Rotary Or Static Phase Converter??

In your original post you said it was 8500 lbs @ 6 cents a pound. That's $510 for that big bad boy. Be careful, if that's what you paid you are treading the line on felony theft.

For over 20 years I've run my three phase machines on a three phase motor that I rope start to generate the third leg. Works great and pretty cheap to set up.

Actually the ol' boy that was selling the lathe resided in PA while the owner of the lathe resides in Ohio and was out of town at the time of the auction. The guy that was doing the selling said the lathe weighed 8500 pounds. When I finally had the opportunity to talk with the owner he chuckled and said that the weight was actually 3500 to 3800 pounds. That increases the price per pound to $0.14 so maybe I got robbed after all? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I didn't see anyone mention this possible solution, but for guys who like to keep it simple, yet do it right, it might be a good way to go: I met a guy who works at a big motor repair center. He rebuilds (don't know how) used motors into 3-phase rotary convertors, and sells them for around $100 for a 5 hp unit. He claims they have the same efficiency and performance as commercial units (?). Surely he isn't unique in doing this.

You lucked out I have been looking for a good deal on a used lathe and mill for a while now. Anything aroud here brings big bucks. I called a guy about a 17 x100 early 80's a good lathe $7500. I would love to find one like you did. If I don't find somthing in the next year I will look at new imports.

John I also looked at imports but they don't put the steel in them like the older USA made counterparts. I also felt the same way as you when we were searching, almost gave up hope more than once. All the machinery seemed to be located in California and I wasn't about to go that far west to get one. Shipping 3800 pounds via freight was also out of the question.

So every day I checked eBay and used the advanced search option for lathes within 200 miles of our home. I finally got lucky and if you're patient you can too. Good luck in your efforts.

We're now knee deep in mine doing a clean up/touch up. Wanted to do a through inspection of all the gears and mechanisms before we put it to work.
