Should stores be closed on Thanksgiving?

The problem is it's hard to mind your own P's & Q's when your employer says "Leave your family and work on Thanksgiving Day or else." You're sort of involved at that point.

Anyone who shops on Thanksgiving Day should be shamed by the rest of us who still have an ounce of values left.

Talked to a Best Buy sales person a couple days ago , and asked him if they were going to make him work on Thanksgiving day, he told me yes and that they scheduled him for a minimum of 12 hours, I said that's a bummer and hope your getting over time.

He said no- they set it up so that for Thanksgiving week pay period his total hours will work out to Less than 35 hours and that he would receive no over time, I said (time Shifting) and he nodded...

I feel for these workers, Used to be when you put in a long day, you were paid overtime not anymore...

I have never liked blue laws and/or Sunday closing laws except where liquor sales are involved. I think liquor laws help keep drunk driving reduced, though that could be challenged.

I don't know how it is in other states, but when I lived in Georgia, you couldn't buy liquor at the grocery store or a liquor store on Sunday. You could, however, buy liquor at a restaurant or bar, for "consumption on the premises". I never did understand how forcing someone to drink at the bar, vs. taking it home with them, was supposed to reduce drunk driving.

Whenever someone supports not selling alcohol on Sunday, I always ask, "Why Sunday?" The only possible answer is that Sunday is a holy day to Christians. At that point, I don't see how you're not brushing up against that whole, "establishment of religion," thing, but I'm no Supreme Court Justice, so what do I know?

I feel the single biggest reason for unemployment being somewhere around 14% and a stagnant economy for the last decade is because of government telling business what they can and cannot do.

Eddie, IMO you're way off base here. The terrible economy is, in large part, the result of the housing bubble (and associated "investment" activity) that tanked the global economy. And the housing bubble, in large part, was fueled by the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act's prohibition on intermingling investment and commercial banking. So the high unemployment and stagnant economy are the result of too little regulation, not too much--in as much as you can boil something like this down to one thing or the other.

Very true.

A wonderful day with your families for all of you, and if you go shopping, fine....:)
This is a perfect example of where we can walk the walk instead of just talking the talk.
Me, I sure can wait another day.

What about manufacturing operations? The plant that I work at is running on Thanksgiving (today). Typically, we are a 24/7 operation but try to close on holidays when production demands are met. When we run on holidays, we take volunteers from most senior employees down, then force employees from least senior up if there are not enough volunteers. I'm not a fan of running on holidays, but I have had to work them in the past for shut-down related projects.

I can tell you from my perspective, most of the time we don't have to force anyone to work, because they want the overtime (it is a 2 1/2 time day). I don't know if that is the same from retail establishments or not.

Where I worked you would need 20 years to work a Holiday at least. That's Double time and no Bosses time.:D

That's "good" time, no doubt. :)

I wonder to what extent, or not, this is one of those impossible to compute unaccounted costs situations? People seem to agree that the nuclear family is under a lot of pressures. There are personal and social costs associated with dissolving or dysfunctional families.

Needing to hire a lawyer, and then visiting a child in the reformatory, for example, is expensive for everyone in many ways. Could more and better parenting, which requires boots on the ground time, lessen the probability of that happening and consequently avoid the associated costs?
