Should we buy a vacation home with relatives?

Maybe if it was a Kennedy Compound where you basically live in a lodge.

But I had a firend that did this with his folks and 2 brothers and it was always someone [censored] about the other.

One had a dog the other's didn't like. One smoked a pipe the others didn't like. One had kids that one of the other sister-in law's didn't like.

I went up there and slept in a tent once. Never did that again. You could feel the tension.

Kind of like the time 10 years ago when I lost a Sister to breast cancer. After the funeral all us kids were sitting around and decided to get together the following summer for a week long House Boat trip in Tenn before anymore of us left the planet. All six remaining kids and partner's did so. The youngest was around 40 and the oldest 55.

There was a fun few days. But that got to be a long week. People pick up their own way of living when leaving the nest.

I basically had a good time but I would never do that again. And, we didn't have any kids or pets along.

Good luck, Tom

Jerry,

You have read and seen all the comments. I love my parents to death but I would not choose to move back in and live with them and the same would be said on their side. Sure we vacation together but we always end up in different rooms, mobile homes, condos.

When ever you get family together who are set in their ways and often a like tension sets in. I certainly think everyone would understand if you and the wife simply stated your fear or concern that long term it may not be a good idea. Good Luck..

I'm starting to see a vague pattern in the responses. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Maybe, the wife and I will wait another two years or so and just buy one ourselves (with no partners)

My wife's an only child and her parents are both gone, so I can't really relate to your situation. But if I had the same deal come up with either of my parents and siblings involved, I would do a 180 and run like ...., well you know. I love them, but there's no way I want to go into business with any of them. And it could very easily turn into a business venture when all the emotions have run their course, and reality sets in.
I wish you the best of luck. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Like almost everyone else I wouda said " run away from it " but then got to thinking.

Do it, take lots of notes and write a book about it. You may end up as an outcast but what the heck.

Now Jerry, you know that you will be the bad guy still. They were too good to buy a place with us, they had to get one all by themselves!
Can you hear someone saying that????

Good luck to ya!!
We will be here for support!

Jerry,

We've never been in a similar situation ourselves, but my wifes' brother-in-law's family (got that? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif) is involved in one. There are 4 families that "share" a cottage up in northern Wisconsin.

Whenever I hear my sister-in-law complain about "everybody" else, I always remark to my wife that if any of those folks ever invite us to join, we're heading in the opposite direction - FAST!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I would go along with everyone else - pass it up! Unless, of course, you're looking for a new place to park your TC30! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I wouldn't do it. Many times it is difficult to come to a consensus as to whether to spend money on a new roof, paint, etc. Agreeing on colors and roof grade. Etc Etc Etc. I own 50% of a rent house with a good friend of mine. Still a good friend, no problems, but we don't always agree on what we should do. I just defer to him when I'd rather do something else. I just bought another rent house that I have 100% of, and I like it because everything is my call.
