Shredder vs rough cut mower

Is a shredder the same as a rough cut mower. I have a woods rough cut mower (Woods BB72x Cutter). Is that called a shredder?

I keep seeing these references to shredding and mowing together.

Depends on where you live.

Down under i hear they call them 'slashers'. Some peopl ecall them shredders.. some say rough cut mower.. some say rotary mower.. still some others use the stereo type 'bush hog' while others prefer the more generic 'brush hog'.. some simply say 'hogging'.. etc.

I think the simple answer is Yes. The other general usage around here is FM = Finish Mower.

Shoot, guess I don't need to rush out and buy a shredder then huh? I was sure I needed one...not knowing what exactly they did, but with a name like 'shredder', you feel obligated to own one

The only other ref to 'shredder' i see is a chipper/shredder.. IE a device that eats branches and makes wood chips out of them..

We called them shredders in the farm country in West Texas. Probably more of a reference in AG since we were shredding cotton stalks, milo stalks, haygrazer etc rather than to the rough mowing of pasture grass. I have had to change my terminology since using TBN. I think mowing is more of an appropriate term for grass cutting than shredding. I still feel like a city slicker when I say rotary mower. Kinda like the difference between dinner and lunch--dinner was at noon, supper at night, and lunch is what folks in the big cities up "nawth" ate.

Here, in rural areas they are "shredders" and that's what I've always called them. In the urban areas, however, they are often called rotary cutters or bush-hogs and when I call them a shredder they think I mean a wood chipper.

Until I started playing 'round on the internet, I'd never heard 'em called anything but a bush hog. The name stuck when BUSH HOG, the company, started marketing bush hog, the mower, in the 1950's.

Brush hog seems a little "city-fied" to me. Rotary mower sounds more like a lawn mower. Shredder sounds like something Richard Nixon would have made famous. Slasher sound (A) hockey term (B) murderous rampage.

'Round these parts, it's "soft drink" or "coke" (in the generic carbonated carmel flavored/colored drink sense). And it's coffee, tea, water, bourbon and 'shine . Soda/Pop or any variation upon that theme indicates an alien of some nature, be it for the north/south/east/west, or points beyond. But us hillbillies don't even need to hear a person speak to know a transplant when we see one! Shoes or a full set of teeth is a certain tip-off

I believe the correct nomenclature is Rotary Cutter.
That's what those field mowers are called on most implement manufacturers' web sites.

You may be correct Roy but that term is confusing as finish mowers, reel mowers and flail mowers all cut using a rotary motion too.

Rotary cutter is a vague artificial generic term just like tissue paper. I'm partial to Bush Hog and Kleenex.

Good analogy, Kleenex actually has to spend a lot of money convincing people to use the term "tissue" because if the courts agree that it's a common term they lose the trademark on it. I'd hate to buy a "bush hog" and find out it's a cheap knockoff able to use the name because it's in the common vernacular so to me it will be a "rotary cutter"

Back to the topic, to this darn Yankee a "shredder" is usually attached to a chipper, and I would have thought a flail mower would be the one to get tagged with the "shredder" moniker.

Well, folks, even BushHog brand designates them as "Rotary Cutters".Bush Hogｮ Agricultural Products

The industry has been using the term Rotary Cutter for a loooong time.

Around here Rotary Cutters are referred to as "BushHogs" , just like people Xerox a piece of paper, instead of make a copy.

BushHog, Shredder, Slasher, Brush-Hog are vernacular terms assigned.
In Texas they "shred" using a Rotary Cutter, so they call them "Shredders".
In Kentucky, Virginia, Maryland we use them to mow tall grass, horse pastures, and stickers, brush, vines and small trees. We "BushHog" an overgrown area. We use them to "cut" cornstalks, never called it "Shredding".
Certainly doesn't make us city slickers.

I would bet that the technical term Rotary Cutter has it's roots back to when it was Patented, probably to distinguish itself from a reel-type mower or a sicklebar.

Even if you don't have all them implements, get more of them washers. They do come off at the most inopportune times.

I have a 5 foot King Kutter rotary cutter and my neighbour has an old 7 foot Mohawk shredder.
The difference is how it leaves the grass when your done. My little guy leave wind rows while the 7 foot shreadder leaves small bits of grass spread out over its entire width. Hence I believe the term shreadder rather than rotary cutter.
In fact, one of the fellows out of Florida uses a 5 foot Bush Hog with the right side taken off as a substiture for a disc mower/conditioner when he is haying.

At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it.......Cheers from East TX.

Sounds to me like the "shredder" you describe is really a flail mower.

Down here in Texas, they call this a finishing mower.

And this is called a rotary cutter.

Looks like the top one is just what you would find on a riding lawnmower except it is being powered by the pto on your tractor. Looks like two different pieces of equipment and their uses are different if you ask me.
