Shuttle versus HST

Absoluteley . We load several thousand round and big square bales each year and I find nothing is as fast loading or as accurate for feathering and touching the load up as mechanical shuttle and foot throttle , I wont buy a tractor without a foot throttle .

I agree. I can place my tractor in a precise location with less time and less guess work. Every movement is intentional. I had no idea how well that setup would work until I got my Kubota with Hydraulic shuttle and of course a foot throttle. Bought another tractor yesterday, a Ford 3910 FWD with mechanical shuttle. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered it also has a foot throttle. Did not know they did that back then. :)

various options folks get themselves into... so many controls and way to do things...

tractor controls.png

to many controls.... left foot / right foot *shrugs* which is which?

forgot to add pictures for... to select a wider range of speed.
--gear shifter, 1-4 forward, 1-3 reverse, center neutral
--single lever for low/high
--low/medium/high
--1-4 gear selector.
-----any combination of above with a button to dump clutch

--electronic clutch, or gear box / transmission, that handles clutch automatically.

--engage / un-engage - 4wd / Mfwd or like.

--engage / un-engage - creeper gears. (very slow crawl)

--FEL 2 levers, 1 joystick
--FEL with 3 funtions for say a grapel. 3 levers, or joystick with 3rd function.
------either above with possibly extra button to dump clutch, more seen on wheel loaders.

=======================
then ya have Zero turns.. with 2 hand levers, one lever operating left rear wheel, one lever operating right rear wheel.
--same as above for skid steers, but with a few extra buttons on the levers
--more of a combo lever / joystick setup for skid steers.

Ain't that the truth. My neighbor is a retired farmer. Hasn't owned a tractor built in the 21st Century. He's borrowed my Kubota a couple times. When he gets on it he always says "now tell me what all these levers do again". I go thru it, detailing the things he "really" needs to know. He is always nervous when he gets ready to go and tells me to get back outta the way so he don't run over me. :)

My tractor is a syncro shuttle. I do almost all my work on steep hills plowing driveways, bush hogging fields, plowing fields, grading driveways, loader work, etc. I also load and unload pallets of cement on and off delivery trucks daily. Syncro shuttle provides exceptional control and clutching is not an issue what so ever. In fact, I bet I can complete chores as quickly and accurate, if not better than using an HST tranny. It really comes down to what you're most comfortable with. Esentially, you're paying an additional $3K for HST (as you net power will be about the same).

My Massey 1533 has the Power Shuttle and I really like it

I've driven a gear tractor for 25 years. I now have an HST.

I'll never have a other gear tractor.

My 2 cents, if you are using your tractor for loader work get HST, if its for field work get a shuttle. I use my Kioti for food plot work and cutting big fields, which I prefer the shuttle.

I agree 100%.

I agree 100%.

Yeah, I think tractor size comes into play also. When you get up above 50HP the uses of the tractor tend to change.

I don't mean to offend anyone so am giving my disclaimer up front. No arguments desired. Just my opinion. Tractors in the CUT size and down are generally used for light chore work and small tasks. 90% of their life is spent doing tasks that they easily handle. Repetitive, low power requirement tasks. In that World HST shines.

Large CUT tractors and up into the Utility or AG class tractors are generally used for heavy FEL work, medium duty chore work (carrying two big bales) and larger occasional ground engagement tasks. 90% of their life is spent doing tasks that require their power and weight. Monotonous, grueling taks. In that World Shuttle shines.
