I've heard a lot of people say that the JD Yanmars were built to JD specs. I really wonder how close this is to the truth. After seeing a JD 850 side by side with a YM 2500, they are clones. The differences, I believe, are in the tranny and PTO speeds and a relatively minor in detail. I suspect, based on other allegedly "badge engineered" products, that JD didn't provide engineering specifications so much as they simply requested certain HP, transmissions and options.

After all, why would Yanmar lower the standards just to build a John Deere (wink wink, nudge nudge).

Some of the JD tractors were definitely Yanmars. That includes the 650, 750 and 850. Also the 790 and 990. Others were built to JD specs. I'm quite sure Yanmar made sure they didn't lower their standards despite this:D

I owned a YM 1700 for 14 years...
Never needed any parts...
Darn thing just ran...and ran...and ran...and ran...
Had 667 hours on it when I purchased her and traded her in at 1250 hours...
Great tractor...
Parts are very easy to come by...
Ahem...
If you need them...
Dealer I purchased her from kept filters and consumables...
This was very important because this was in 1992 before the internet...
Dang, I talk about HER like another woman in my life...
Don't tell my wife...

My 1510D has at least 1250 hours. Since it is a 3 digit hour meter it could be 2250, 3250, etc. I am guessing it is 1250 based on most of the other imported Yanmars having under 1000 hours on them. I hope to keep this tractor for the rest of my life. It fits me well, is easy to use and service, has parts availability should I need them and the loader has an industrial bucket that can dig and is small enough to fit through my stall doors. Sure, clearing 6 foot high snow drifts or 4 tons of mulch out of my trailer takes longer with a small loader but the tractor has to fit all of my needs and cleaning stalls is something I do all the time.

I consider all of my tractors and vehicles to be "the other men in my life"! They all have names too!

My 1610D had less than 10 hours when I got it and it has a 4 digit hour meter. So I didn't know what it had been doing for 30 years and I didn't know how many hours it actually had on it. It was also not the same tractor I was shown pictures of before I bought it. The list of problems it had was very long. This is why I say I would have to see another used tractor before I bought it. I was very lucky that the dealer took it back and returned most of my money.
