how mutch is a Sibaura SD2843T worth the tractor needs a motor has a kubota motor in it now dont work it dont bolt up right I can buy the tractor for 300.00 is it worth fixing also is there any other motors I can sub that will fit

Ed, I think there are a lot of folks who spend far more on "toys" than $300. If you want a fun project that will cost you several hundred more (or more likely thousand), then I would say you have yourself a fun project. You might be lucky enough to even find another Shibaura with a blown transmission and a good motor. The problem is not knowing what has been modified to get that Kubota engine into the Shibaura. The original drivetrain may have been hacked pretty badly. It's a roll of the dice.

If you can buy the tractor for $300, I think I'd offer $100 to see how bad the person wants to sell it.

kenmac, the way you come across, you seem to talking down to the rest of us for some reason....I made a statement about getting parts for old US iron...I stand behind that statement. Not at all Bob, Roy was talking about the lack of safety equipment on grey tractors & parts support. & I was letting him (or the gentleman )know that, With the right mod. grey , there is no trouble getting parts support or safety equipment.I owned a to-20 & an 8 n (about the same) I could hardly get parts for them anymore .I said (or meant) I would put my grey against any 20-30 us tractor when it comes to getting safety equipment & parts. Nothing to do with plowing.

Actually, it is easier to get parts for some 50+ year old American Iron than it is for some 20 year old CUTS...

That's right paul. I am able to get parts for my grey that, you can't get for some newer CUTS. But, I sure had a hard time getting them for the to-20 & 8n I once had. That's the reason they left me

Aside from my grey market Yanmar, you may have also noticed I have a 1950 Farmall H. No problems getting parts for either. No, I can't get a ROPS for my Farmall, but I can, and did, get a PTO shield. That PTO can be started without using the clutch. In fact the tractor can be started without using the clutch! For the most part on this forum we are discussing CUTs. Grey market Yanmars have an amazing parts availability including ROPS. Most 20-30 year old made for the US market CUTs do not have the parts availability that the greys do, especially ROPS and PTO shields. I probably wouldn't buy a grey Hinomoto since the company is out of business, nor would I buy a grey Kubota since I know I won't have parts support, but a Shibaura is probably a safe buy for a fun project.

Yes, Yanmar built most of the JD CUTs for nearly 30 years, but most of them were JD designs and Yanmar built to their specifications. The 790 is a Yanmar design though. I admit I did point that out because I found it offensive that it was said no one should own a grey market tractor, especially considering that it is a $300 tractor. I love those old Farmalls but when it came to buying a CUT in my price range, a grey Yanmar seemed the smarter way to go.

I have no prob with grey market I own and work a YM1700B I push that tractor to what I think is the breaking point and it keeps on going dont even raise the temp what I was concerned with is being able to get parts for this tractor I have since got a email from a guy in Ky he said that alot of people are looking for motors for that model tractor must be somthing to that I also got pm from hoye tractor said they could never get parts so i think I will let it go thanks for all the posts and good info Ed

Try reading the posts in their entirety.

I don't think you'll find any post specifically stating not to own a grey market....but to ensure you know the very real risks involved in buying one of these machines.

IF you're a good wrench turner and hane no issues with waiting for parts...then at least you can make an informed decision.

I'm an OK wrench turner...not too fast, but can figure out some problems. However, I wouldn't even consider a grey market (and yes, I know my 790 (and previous 670)) were contracted for build by Yanmar.
But don't confuse contracted out manufacturer as the same as grey market machines. Grey market machines were never designed with the American market in mind.

The original post discused a Sibaura with a Kubota engine installed that, apparently wouldn't bolt up right (and wasn't running). If one wants a project to play with...well, have a ball. If one is looking for a tractor to use (and buy it on the cheap)...just not a worthwhile project, in my book. Better off looking for an old Kubota (one of those old 175's) or and old Deere CUT

I've heard a lot of people say that the JD Yanmars were built to JD specs. I really wonder how close this is to the truth. After seeing a JD 850 side by side with a YM 2500, they are clones. The differences, I believe, are in the tranny and PTO speeds and a relatively minor in detail. I suspect, based on other allegedly "badge engineered" products, that JD didn't provide engineering specifications so much as they simply requested certain HP, transmissions and options.

After all, why would Yanmar lower the standards just to build a John Deere (wink wink, nudge nudge).

Since I owned a 1610D for a short while and now a JD 790 I do have some experience with this subject. The 790 is definitely a Yanmar, same control positions but bigger, wider, heavier, more HP and little things like float and joy stick control, PS, all safety items, FWD and Diff lock on the go, regen hydraulics, bigger platform, key shutoff, auto prime, bigger tires, live PTO, steel lines on loader, zero interest loan, etc. Better than the 1610D in every way except the tranny, which was certainly much better on the 1610. However the biggest things with the 790 is that it is new vs 30 years old and it has a local dealer with a full warrantee all for less than twice the money. Parts were readily available online for the 1610 but I needed a lot of them. My experience with grey market wasn't very good, many have had a very good experience. I wouldn't do it again w/o a dealer who was close, w/o seeing the tractor first and w/o paying a lot less than 1/2 as much as new.

I don't know how long ago you owned your yanmar but, parts support for certian models have come a long way.It also depends who you buy from as to the quality of the tractor. I paid less than 1/2 what a new tractor cost with a 6 mo warranty. I have only had to replaced a couple of seals. The dealer would have replaced but, it was no big deal to replace them. The dealer I bought from is about 2 hrs away & has thousands of parts on the shelf

I never had a problem getting any part for the 1610D, including engine parts, seals, and frame parts all of which I needed. Yes I got a bad tractor and my dealer was a 1000 miles away, all my fault. I don't think anyone can argue that the risk goes up if you buy a 30 year old tractor vs a new one so I think the price has to reflect that and that is something everyone has to judge for themselves. For me personally to buy a 30 year old used tractor again, I would have to see it first and it would have to be 1/2 price or less for the equivalent tractor. The 790 is a lot more tractor than a 1610D. I have owned 4 tractors, 3 used and the 1610D was the only bad experience but my 8N I bought from the owner and my first JD I bought from a JD dealer. Both were very good tractors and very good deals.
