Yeah, I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for an older/better made mower that I don't mind working on. I get aggravated quickly working on machines/parts that I know were skimped on by the manufacturer.
Along those lines I worked on a Cub Z that was 1 year old the other day. It had the 48" fab deck and I was just bringing the maintenance up to date. I think the design was pretty decent, though the bean counters got a hold of it and made it less of a good machine. Assembly too was sketchy in a couple spots. IE they faced the grease fitting for the center spindle in the only direction that you couldn't grease with a normal end on the gun, 1 wheel inverted etc. Just PIA stuff that could have been averted. Built on a Monday I'd guess... Glad to hear that you have him cutting again with his familiar machine.

never owned one but heard nothing but good things about them, my cousin owned one and beat the heck out of it but it was a gear drive unit

I bought one last year and traded it this year. Mine had 1100 hrs,was beat up badly, and cost $3500 with MMM, FEL, rake, blade, tiller and brush hog. Spent another $2500 getting it fixed up at the dealer. Parts are not cheap and can be difficult to find.
Nice little machine but I think a bit large for just cutting grass IMHO.
Got $7k on trade with the MMM, FEL, tiller and Brush hog.
The one you found looks in good shape but seems a bit expensive. Most people will want a FEL with a tractor that size.

Sounds like it's just barely broken in, and by a guy who cared for it from new. Can you buy a anything near this quality in a similar brand new machine for this money? This one is proven, and it's a bit of a classic.
It sounds overpriced, but you said you were sick and tired of low quality riding lawnmowers. This one is certainly top quality.
