Re: Sick of \"what oil do i use \" debates

OK all you guys know your oil, I don't. I just purchased a new Farm Pro 2420, with manual steering, a model TY290X engine and think it is a JM180 (Jinma Tractor). I have never owned or used a tractor before, so what lubercants do I need to use and where. By the way, I used Haveline 10W30 in the new finish mower gear box, is this ok? I lubed the blade spindles with some type of generic high temp grease that I got at AutoZone that the salesman recommended, and the tube stated that is was for bush hogs etc. As I plan to change all the fluids and grease all fittings, after replaceing them with better ones, any help you can give will be appreciated because the manual suggests various weights of Diesel fuel for oil. Also what oil or grease should I put on those round ball thingies in the hitch and should I grease the blade on the scraper.

Thanks in Advance
Dave

Re: Sick of \"what oil do i use \" debates

Apparently you didn't get an owner's manual with that mower David. Engine oil is no good in a gear box. Drain that out in favor of a proper gear oil of a viscosity suitable for your climate. Understanding that finish mowers get their majority use in warm weather anyway, a thick one like 85W140 will probably work just fine. Again assuming no owner's manual, I'd also recommend a PTO speed of 540 rpm to start. I doubt the mower has a 1000 rpm transmission.

I see you do have a tractor manual though, and you can ignore lubrication recommendations. The manuals are translated directly from the Chinese, so those recommendations are geared more toward their own domestic use. Since we have much greater access to multi-viscosity lubricants, you should go with those that are recommended for your climate. I live in Western Kentucky, where the winters are relatively mild. I use 85W140 in the front diff, AW32 in the hydraulics and steering, 15W40 in the engine, and 75W90 in the transmission. If you live in a warm climate, and/or don't plan on using the tractor during winter, these ought to work for you just fine.

If its because it should have been put in the lubrication forum, well that is not true. This discussion is about Chinese tractor fluids, and the fact that the factory is not dealing with Chinese farmers in the stick like the manuals are geared for.
Besides, we would probably have to put up with a bunch of stuipid comments about why the JD and other big names can do such and such with lighter fluid but the junk chinese cant. Seen too many of those comments to even want to post anything about a chinese tracter other than this forum.
Start your own discussion in the lubrication forum if you feel so inclined.

LOTS of tractos have common sumps for one or more areas.

Early fords shared tranny, diffy and hyds. later fords seperated those.. but then they went back to it.

MY 1997 NH 1920 uses 1 sump for the hyds, diffy, and tranny. and a seperate sump for the pow steering.

Yanmar gear units use hyds, diffy and tranny in 1 sump.

Also.. speaking about the yanmar.. we, again, are talkiong about an older tractor.. 70's era. I still don't feel their rear end should be getting ATF.. just doesn't seem correct.

As for 5mph on a tractor... Every time I drive my tractor.. .. any of them.. they get up over 5mph. My 1920 and an old ford 2n with a sherman overdrive tranny can get up to 18mph on the road. And yes.. when the trailer isn't available.. they do get roaded to the gas station down the street.. or to an adjacent pasture.. etc. For that matter.. I probably mow at 5mp if the grass is low...

What are others opinions on ATF as a gear lube for a final drive system?

Re: Sick of \"what oil do i use \" debates

Thanks for the info Greg, No I did not get a manual with the mower, and now that I think about it the guy at AutoZone probably thought I was talking about a 20" push mower with a 3.5 B&S engine.

Even then he's wrong. Straight 30W is almost always specified for air-cooled small gasoline engines like that.

What type mower DO you have? I might be able to help come up with an owner's manual
