I'm back. This one was stronger than the last, but didn't last as long. We didn't get much more damage -- some rain driven trhough sealed up windows (!!) that soaked a carpet, a few more shingles off the roof, a couple of more panels out of the pool screen, some aluminum fascia and soffit blown off and the fence knocked down (again). Once again, the eye passed directly over us about 1:00 AM last Sunday.
We still don't have electricity, but the folks across the street from us got power today, and that was enough to turn the cable internet back on. I had the foresight to plug the cable modem into the generator, and was amazed to see it on about 9 PM this evening! We should get power back tomorrow, since they're obviously working in out neighborhood. Last time it was Canadian crews; I think this batch is from New Jersey. It will be nice to get AC and hot water back again.
There's some debate going on about whether insurance companies should charge a second deductible. On the one hand, I can see where they are entitled to a separate deductible for each storm. On the other hand, with a "normal" period of time between storms, we would have had enough time to make repairs, and the losses for the second storm would therefore have been much greater. In this case, there is only a small amount of incremental damage because the simple fact is that whatever was going to be lost was already lost the first time around. It doesn't seem fair that the insurance companies should use the deductible to completely escape all responsibility for damage the second time.
A brief health update: I went to the Univ of Miami's Jackson Hospital today for an initial interview with one of their leading cardiologists. He echoed all the other opinions that surgery is probably out of the question except for a transplant, and he's not ready to commit to that, yet. So, looks like I'll remain in limbo land for a while. He did adjust my medications and has scheduled a stress test in 6 weeks after I have built up a little more strength.
