Silly question about gate width

/ Silly question about gate width #41
I got a gate setup that the previous property owner built. It is a 16' single gate that I close and lock each time I come or go from the property, yes I lock myself in there when I work, I have a theory on that. Emergency folks tell me that a standard style gate and lock will not stop them.

This is for primary access gates to farm or home. Seldom used access gates to particular pastures are a different animal.

The road with the gate is only 10-12 feet wide and joins the 20 foot wide paved county road at a 90 degree angle. The wise PO set the gate about 50 feet back from the paved edge of the county road. This is very important because it allows me to pull my truck and trailer (50 feet combined length) off the road while I open the gate and it allows for maximum trailer swing when trying to negotiate the 90 degree corner.

The only negative to a setback gate is the garbage dumpers and turnarounders have a better place to do their deeds. I suppose a guy could use a double gate setup.

/ Silly question about gate width #43
anojones, I have a 14' gate and wish it were much bigger, a lot depends maybe it all depends on what the road is like on both sides of the gate. My main entrance is a mile off the asphalt at the end of a county maintained road it comes straight to my gate, starting at my gate I have a 8' tall rock ledge along my right side that extends for about 40' and then makes a hard right to go up it on a 20 or so degree grade when I'm hooked up to a 30' long trailer and driving a LWB Crew Cab it is all I can to do get in the gate hugging the right side and then start my turn to the right once the trailer starts thru the gate if not done perfectly the trailer will snag on its left back corner at the gate. It would be much better in my case to have a wider gate but to the left of the road you guessed it, its another rock cliff about 6' tall along the left edge of the road so the gate is as wide as the road. Gotta get a bull dozer.
