Silo usage?

/ Silo usage? #22
Offer it to DoD as a Seriously, a friend had a cellular provider use his property on an interstate for a cell site, and the town made the provider disguise it as a silo (this was in Maine, very rustic area

That sounds better than trying to make cell towers look like trees. They are about 3 times taller than the tallest trees I've seen them near.

Not fooling anyone. The gray steel seem less obtrusive to me.

Farmshow has several as a house. Seven Springs Lodge usese the metal ones as guest houses. Years ago I was called out to put some Cow manure in the base of a silo. I get strange requests al lthe time like this. The man was kinda odd but what came to be after he sold the place I got called to remove the manure. The former owner was into a new cash crop.

I like the guest house idea. The top could be an amazing lookout.

I have a pal who took down a block silo .......by sledge hammering out blocks on the one side till it fell over. Yikes!

He has two more silos (block) that he says I could have for free if I wanted them. I'd love to get them but how and like the OP says, what for.

man, lots of great ideas here!

so, i'll throw a few into the mix.

right now i need a safe place to store fuel. so you could use it for that if its not connected or too close to other buildings.

i'm also thinking it would make a wicked compost pile if you could load it from the top and pull finished compost from the bottom.

we need pics! there are so many variables like size, what condition it's in, what it's made out of, etc....

here in kansas, there are lots of these old silos around. several i've seen have fully grown trees sticking out of the top! a local sawmill uses one to hold sawdust.

how about a wicked smokehouse? you could smoke whole hogs and sides of beef.

the possibilities are endless....

last comment is if you'll be using it for housing of some type, i would have it evaluated by a structural engineer or inspector to make sure it's safe. you don't want the leaning tower of piza in your back yard after you've sunk thousands into a retrofit.
