Silver Bottle, Diesel Kleen + Cetane Boost Additive (questions)

Well, this is going back a bit, so total recall may be met with some skepticism. Remember when they took the lead out of gas? The lead was a lubricant for the valve train and many mechanics were raising holy Caine that we would all have to replace our valves and guides with nickel ones! I did see some damage from this, but they have reformulated the gas to abate the issue. I drive a 1991 Volvo that has lived through a lot of changes in fuel, still going strong.

No more asking if Ethyl is around tonight (not really what we said, but this IS a family net!) so made us devoid of at least one good joke. That all us pump jockeys heard only 100 times a day!

My 97 Dodge Cummins has been through a fuel change or so, and seems to be going just fine.

The upper cylinder needs a film of oil to prevent leak past the the rings. In fact I find using a 40 weight vs a 30 weight is the difference between adding oil between changes or not.

The sulphur thing isn't a myth. I don't understand the chemistry but it a known principle. It's worth looking up though.

So I looked it up. Turns out there are more theories than answers. But the one that seemed to strike a cord with me was the idea that according to the oil industry, Sulphur is NOT a key ingredient for upper cylinder and injector pump lubrication in diesel engines. But IT IS the key indicator of lubricity because the process by which sulphur is removed from the diesel fuel also reduces the lubricity of the fuel.

So...........it isn't very important.
But we can't live without it. :confused3:
But we don't need it.

Thanks for clearing that up, Scotty! Where have you been this whole thread?

Well, my theory is, you can get water in your fuel at any time, so if the additive`s are keeping my tractor from icing up, thats good enough for me. As for lubricant, i would hope that the manufacturers are taking that into consideration while engineering all the components. If they didnt, i would think they would have a large amount of warranty issues that would eventually run them out of business.

Life use to be much simpler before the internet. You buy a new tractor put fuel in it and go. No worries. Then came the internet with different views on this and everyone worries:thumbsup:

Agreed, my goodness, what DID we do before the internet? Well, for one, we were smart enough to cut our tank of diesel fuel with a gallon, or so, of kerosene, end of problem! Filters had water separators on them though, and the little fella Kubota's don't have that luxury.

As for water in the fuel, yeah, that is a problem, especially without a separator. Attaching a picture of a filter I cut open after laying in a foot of snow to remove it, the tiny little filter caught all the water, and promptly froze it. The tractor had about 20 hours on it at this point. I got the filter replaced, and did it all over again a few weeks later, in 18" of snow! That's when I gave up using the Kubota filters and went to the Wix/Napa filter, got rid of the paper type element, and yes, I trust them to keep out the junk. You really cannot filter all the water no matter how badly you want to.

But yes, I do use the PS in the winter now, and still might add kerosene!

I don't blame the internet, I think society is just changing. Remember when you used to order a new car and had to wait for it? Then you used to keep it for 30 years and just kept fixing it?

All these companies, be them tractor manufacturers or oil companies or what not, are all trying to remain competitive and profitable in the context of a disposable society.

I'm glad for the internet because a lot of this crap going on behind the scenes would be kept from us and we wouldn't have forums like this to debate the subject and make an educated decision about the course of action we choose.

It never ceases to amaze me how uneducated salespeople are about the products they sell. I recently spoke to one and he couldn't even tell me if the tractor I was looking at was a common rail direct injection or conventional indirect injection.

So, I do my research. And while forums are often full of misinformation, that misinformation can also point you in the right direction to chase down the information you need.

Thanks rScotty for the link. It was informative.

I agree with you I use the internet to search for parts and info how to do different things. I like to restore old tractors and the internet had opened up a parts market that you would not believe. When I bought this tractor I searched the internet for questions I could not get an answer for from the dealer.. The regen thing had me cautous on buying one and every dealer I talked to had a different story. When I bought my other tractor 33 years ago I went in bought it they delivered it and that was that. They never saw it again
