I first came across this on a friend's computer. They are an elderly Japanese couple, and I was helping them set up a wireless network in their home, as they got a new computer in the living room, and had the old one upstairs...Got that up and running fine, except for that old computer.
Anywy, the stumbling block was that the operating system was Japanese windows 98, and instead of the \ symbol when the \ key was pressed, you got a "Y" like symbol, but actually it is the symbol for Japanese Yen (like the $ is here), and the system would stall when files were to be installed. Or so I think.
This morning I decided to get adventurous, and try to set up a couple of our computers for file sharing...and low and behold I find that on my computer, my wifes computer and her laptop, we also get a yen symbol rather than the \ when the \ key is pushed.
When I open a dos window and want to change directories by typing in cd\temp for example, I get cdYtemp, where the Y is actually the yen symbol. And the system tells me it cannot find the directory. However, if I type cd temp, the system changes to the temp directory without problem.
I don't think I set up my computer to display the Japanese language, but both of my wife's computers are set up to do so. All three are runnning windows XP. I did not yet check my older laptop that I have in my workshop, which is also running XP. I will do that later...
So my question is, what does one do to make the \ work like it should? The \ key does work normally in MS Word or Notepad. It also would not work properly in a windown where I needed to type in something like \\computer name\share or something like that...
Anyone have any thoughts? I don't really know who else to ask even... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I do know a lot of you guys are pretty sharp when it comes to computers /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
