Site performance issues

Obviously when timeouts happen you can't see the page. But when the pages load after long delays, can I get one (or more) of you to take a screenshot of the ads that are being displayed? I'm trying to track down what's causing this. We're not having obvious culprits, so it might be something sneakier.

I'm really sorry it's happening, but give us a bit more time and we WILL track it down.

Hmmm, is there something on the site that waits for the ad to load? I am running adblock plus in FF (which prevents the ads from loading), at work I also run noscript which ONLY allows scripts from TBN and Google.com (to enable the new searchbox).

The site itself isn't waiting (our loads aren't very high, we're not hitting swap) but browsers can't display an entire page if something is missing (since it needs to know where everything goes) so often times a wait will be for one of the ads.

With your adblocking on, do you get delays also?

If you don't have adblocking, does part of the page display and hang? When it's hanging, at the bottom of the browser there is sometimes a "Waiting for ________.com" or something describing what it's doing. Or "Connecting to __________" if you can try to spot what that is, we can get some more information to track this down.

I still get delays and 503 errors even with Adblock and NoScript. Next time it happens, I will switch to Chrome and see what it is waiting on.
Note that AdBlock in Chrome used to just hide the ads, the way Chrome was setup it couldn't prevent them from downloading, not sure if that's still the case.

I appreciate it, guys.

I miss the days when our slowdowns really were because we didn't have enough server RAM or a bottleneck with MySQL. These days, the slowdowns are much harder to track down. But we'll get it.
