Sizing a logging winch to a tractor

I've seen that before. One more thing to have to carry. I just use a chain on a stump, or a nylon strap if a tree, and hook it on one of the slides on the cable. Plus, half the time I've chained to the log halfway back to get the end where I want it and have to go rerig. Anyways, that's just one of the situations where I find myself walking back to the tractor thinking how handy the wireless would be.

Oh yes, the old slide-as-a-snatch block trick. I've been wondering if I was the only one who did that. It works pretty well, doesn't it? although I'm alway wary about overstressing the cable.

Sort of on the subject line here...I was wondering what precautions you take to assure your safety when using the winch? Do you place a log or heavy coat over the cable to limit it's travel in the event of a brakeage?

No. There's enough rope on the winch to keep off to the side enough so I feel safe.
