Hi,

I am fairly new to the tractoring world.

I purchased a Bobcat CT230 last July and love it. I need to level out some land for a runway this spring. The CT230 is 30 HP and I was wondering what size of box blade to get? 60" or 72"? Pros / cons of those sizes?

Many thanks.

It is helpful if the boxblade,at least, spans your wheel width. What is your wheel width?

Forgot to ask about your "runway" as in aviation runway?

I have a CK35 HST. Bought a used 6 ft box blade that works fairly well. If I had to do it over I would get a 5 ft which would cover the width of the tires
The CK35 does not seem to have a problem using the 6 ft but I have to watch it doesn't get to full of gravel. Having said that I normally grade in two wheel drive.

Absolutely needs to cover your tire tracks, so people can't tell where you have been, or going to.

I would use a landplane for this job instead of a boxblade. Does a much better job of planing a surface smooth. At least check into this before you make the jump.

The width? Well I don't know exactly but my tiller is 60" and covers the tracks.

60" would be the min that I would get. Just wondering about the power issue with a 72".

It is an aviation runway.

As for the land plane. Never seen one of those. I do have a gravel driveway to maintain also thats why I thought box blade.

tell us more about your aviation runway? sounds interesting. what is the existing topo? size? Can we assume this will ultimately be a grass runway? Several thousand feet of level ground, say 100' wide could be a daunting task for your tractor. You may need more attachments in addition to a boxblade. Incidently, you can never have enough attachments.

Your CT230 is the same size as a CK35. Kioti makes the CT230 for Bobcat. 5 ft will cover your tracks. Now that I have a better understanding of your runway needs I would suggest you bring in a big machine to do it. Not know the type of soil it could be a pretty big project for a CT230. To get it nice and level a big grader could do that job in a small fraction of what it would take your tractor and do better job at getting it level. Give some thought to the many hours it may take. For a runway nice and level is a good thing.

I have a 29 hp Kubota B2920. I have a 60" Bush Hog brand box blade. There is no way it would handle any more than that as even it will stop me in my tracks usually due to lack of traction. Maybe if you were using it to just smooth loose material, it could handle the 6', but if you are using it for any digging in existing topsoil, grass, etc, I think it would overwhelm you power.
When you start using it, the top link adjustment makes a big difference in how the box blade reacts. The shorter the top link, the more it will dig in. As you lengthen the top link, it will dig less and eventually start to ride on the back blade.
