I bought a used bush hog and I have to buy a PTO shaft for it, I measured from the tractor PTO shaft center where the groove is cut, to the center of the gear box bolt hole and it measures 45 inches, I have noticed that these shafts have different lengths collapsed and extended, what length do I need to buy?

You have measured the longest measurement the PTO shaft needs to be. You also need to measure the shortest measurement from the end of the gearbox shaft to the end of the PTO shaft on tractor that would be the minimum or retracted (collapsed) PTO shaft length. You measured 45" as maximum, say the minimum is 37". That's the length you need. something that will adjust from 37-45". You can buy longer and slide the two halves apart and then cut to the length you need.
That will give you enough room (2-3") to slide on to the gearbox shaft bolt hole and enough to slide on and lock to the PTO shaft. My guess would be you need a 40-42" collapsed measurement PTO shaft.
