I am thinking of putting a electric winch on the back of my tractor for when I sometimes I get stuck or sometimes pull out a tree. I probably will use a 12000 lb winch, my question is size quick disconnect Anderson plug do I need. I don't plan on leaving it on all the time plus it will make it easier to jump start if need be.

read the full load amp rateing on the unit...or just buy some 400 amp plugs....:)

I agree to get the higher rated Anderson plugs (340 or 450) amp. Of course you'll have to feed the plug with battery cable direct off the battery. I bought a few at the last car parts flea market I went to. Installed one on the tractor, still have to install one on my truck and jumper cables.

What I did was install a second battery on a tray with the winch mount. Assuming your rigging something up to the 3PTH. Then you can get away wth a smaller plug and cable. ThinK I used #4 welding wire.

Tow trucks have those mounted permanently to the battery (using booster cables) with Anderson connects at the end. Do the same for your winch.
Cut, flatten and drill a hole through the end clamps of the booster cable set and bolt to your battery.
Then, cut the other end clamps and attach Anderson's where needed half way down the cable.
At the end you cut the clamps, add a couple of eye-lets for your winch.

Go with a hydraulic winch especially for the back of the tractor right next to your outlet's. An electric winch will take WAY more "juice" than your (or any) ordinary tractor electrical system has to offer. I've had an 8000# Ramsey elec. winch actually stall a full sized p.u. truck with a stock electrical sys. (1 battery & std alternator). I just got an 8000# Ramsey hyd. for a skidding winch project from AW Direct; Ramsey® 8,000-lb. Hydraulic Industrial Grade Winch - 6-1/2 | AW Direct
and have only used it for skidding in log's & not a heavy self recovery load, but seem's to have all the power I'll need for my 95hp tractor, especially if I double line it.
I think it would also simplify your project as your "power" is already there where you need it.

Mine came with the red ones.

I had a front receiver hitch on the truck at that time, also put one on the tractor.
